A: Part of what we're doing, and that's part of the thinking be-
hind the Orchestra Place project, right now we have one of the top
10 symphonies in the country. We have a hall which is probably,
along with Carnegie Hall and Boston Symphony Hall, one of the
most acoustically sound halls in the country. [DSO Music Direc-
tor] Neeme Jarvi's directorship is top rank. From a pure musical,
symphonic and acoustical perspective, we have a wonderful prod-
uct. That's the good news.
The bad news is you have to be a real lover of symphony to want
to go down [to downtown Detroit] today. The neighborhood isn't real
inviting unless people are real aficionados. We're going to give them
a more friendly environment and more of an experience. People won't
come in five minutes before the symphony starts; they'll be able to
come to dinner, park their car, walk to the symphony. We're going
to very much enhance the parking.

a lover of symphony music, but I think last year, one of the most
popular events was James Taylor playing with the DSO. There are
aging boomers who like James Taylor and a lot of people a gener-
ation older who like the DSO. We were astounded at how broad an
appeal that had.

Q: How extensive is Jewish involvement in Detroit's revi-
talization?
A: I think there are a lot ofJewish individuals who are involved,

but I don't know if there's a lot ofJewish institutional involvement.
I think it's something the Jewish community is interested in doing
more of. It's important that we're perceived by the wider communi-
ty as being committed and involved. I don't think anyone has been
more involved than my father-in-law Max Fisher. My involvement
is inspired in many ways by his example. It was from Max that I
started to hear about Detroit and saw an example of dedication to
the city. ❑
