House, Senate
Races Heat Up

With the sleep-inducing presi-
dential campaign mercifully near-
ing its end, Jewish politicos are
focusing their energies on House
and Senate races across the coun-
trY.
Once again, dozens of retire-
ments and a surly electorate guar-

In an interview on the Fox News
Channel, Mr. Dole offered some
hints about his possible cabinet
choices. And at least one of the
theoretical nominees is likely to
send shudders down the length
and breadth of the pro-Israel com-
munity.
Mr. Dole indicated that he al-
ready has held discussions with
former Gen. Colin Powell about
serving in his cabinet — possibly
as secretary of state.
That choice might cheer pro-Is-
rael activists; General Powell has
close ties to Israeli military lead-
ers and to the pro-Israel commu-
nity in this country, although he
lacks political and foreign policy
experience.
But Mr. Dole also suggested a
role for former Secretary of State
James Baker lll, the man who
turned pressure on Israel into a
science.
Mr. Dole's comments came only
days after Republican leaders ac-
cused the Clinton administration
of trying to pressure Israeli Prime
Minister Binyamin Netanyahu
into making unilateral conces-
sions to the Palestinians.
There is also speculation about
the cabinet in a second Clinton ad-
ministration.
It has been a given for months
that Secretary of State Warren
Christopher is eager to retire.
But lately, there have been
hints that Mr. Christopher might
choose to stay on — especially if
he sees a possible Middle East
conclusion.
If Mr. Christopher decides to
return to private life, there are
several leading contenders for his
job, including U.N. Ambassador
Madeleine Albright and former
Assistant Secretary of State
Richard Holbrooke, the man who
put together the Dayton accords
ending the war in Bosnia.
And former Sen. George
Mitchell, a Maine Democrat who
is now serving as the administra-
tion's special envoy in Northern
Ireland, is a strong candidate be-
cause he would easily win confir-
mation even if the Senate remains
in Republican hands.
