an informative program about
Judaism will provide them with
something valuable. I don't know
if too many of them have ever
been in a synagogue filled with
Jewish activity."
Rabbi Nevins stressed the goal
is not to attract new members.
"It's an altruistic program to
reach an underserved part of the
Jewish community," Rabbi
Nevins said.
Ms. Shapiro added, "The ex-
ploration of religion is foreign to
the new Americans. Most un-
derstand Judaism from a cul-
tural and ethnic perspective, not
a religious perspective. They may
practice some holidays and pre-
pare certain foods, but synagogue
attendance is not part of their
lifestyle.
"This should get the commu-
nity thinking that maybe we
need more human contact with

our new arrivals beyond their
first year here."
Members of the Orthodox com-
munity have been engaging in
"human contact" since 1989,
when Russian immigration in-
creased more than threefold from
the previous year, according to
Rabbi Avraham Jacobovitz of
Machon L'Torah, who began pro-
gramming for the new Ameri-
cans at that time. The rabbi said
while all factions of the Orthodox
community open their doors to
these immigrants, he singled out
Yeshiva Beth Yehudah and the
National Council of Synagogue
Youth as the other organizations
particularly active in the Russ-
ian community.
Rabbi Jacobovitz said Ma-
chon's programs are publicized
through direct mailings and are
well attended, attracting- between
20 and 350 participants. ❑

What if we had more choices?
Better yet, why don't we have
more choice?
We're a nation of 265 million
people. This begs the question:
Are Bob Dole and Bill Clinton
the best candidates to lead our
country?
We asked people at the
Maple-Drake Jewish Commu-
nity Center whom they would
like to see run for president and
why. We told them there were
no rules to this question and
anyone, no matter how much of
a stretch, could run.
Some said they were happy
with the choices that will appear
on the Nov. 5 ballot. Others
"nominated" famous and not-so-
famous candidates.
