Adat Shalom Synagogue will of-
fer five different classes beginning
in October.
Rabbi Daniel Nevins will offer
a weekly Talmud lunch series.
This year's class will study Jew-
ish marriage law. Students will
use the Adin Steinsaltz Eng-
lish/Hebrew edition, to be ordered
at reduced cost. While all texts
will be explained in English, this
course is designed to be a chal-
lenging interaction with the clas-
sic texts of Judaism. It will take
place on Wednesdays, from noon
to 1:30 p.m., on Oct. 2, 9, 16, 23,
30; Nov. 6, 13, 20, 27; and Dec.
4, 11. There is a $40 materials fee.
Lunches at $88 are optional.
In "Service of the Heart: The
World ofJewish Prayer," Rabbi
Nevins will offer an introduction
to the Siddur. This course will
help beginners feel more com-
fortable in any Jewish prayer set-
ting and to make services more
meaningful. Cantor Howard
Glantz will periodically teach
about the nusach, or musical tra-
ditions, ofJewish liturgy. Course
books will be Rabbi Reuven Ham-
mer's Entering Jewish Prayer and
Siddur Sim Shalom. This class
is set for Mondays, from 7 to 8
p.m. on Oct. 7, 14; Nov. 4, 11, 25;
Dec. 2, 9; Jan 6, 13, 27; Feb. 3, 10,
24; March 3, 10 24, 31; April 7.
There is no charge.
Rabbis Efty Spectre and Daniel
Nevins will teach a monthly
course titled "Conservative Ju-
daism: Our Beliefs, History and
Future" on Monday evenings
from 7 to 8 p.m. Students will
have the opportunity to examine
some of the core issues confront-
ed by Conservative Judaism. The
source book will be Rabbi Neil
Gillman's Conservative Judaism.
Classes are planned for Oct. 28,
Nov. 18, Dec. 16, Jan. 20, March
17, April 14. There is no charge.
The Adat Shalom Men's Club
will offer Hebrew literacy classes
at 8 p.m. on Mondays beginning
Oct. 7. These beginning and in-
termediate sessions will be taught
by trained lay persons under the
direction of the synagogue's cler-
gy. There is a materials fee. All
students will be honored at the
synagogue's Hebrew literacy
Shabbat service on Friday
evening, Feb. 28.
The synagogue's sisterhood will
host its 1996 Fall Institute, on
three Tuesday mornings, Oct. 15,
22, 29. At 9:30 a.m., participants
will learn about "Genesis—a Liv-
ing Conversation" from Rabbis
Spectre and Nevins. At 10:30 a.m.
Canto Larry Vieder will offer
"Good Morning, God"—"An In-
troduction to the Shacharit Ser-
vice." Bagels and coffee will be
served at 9 a.m. There is no
charge.
