KAL AND ADA BANDALENE

Our Man
In Denmark

CARL ALPERT

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

The 140 journalists who at-
tended the International Con-
ference of the Jewish Media in
Jerusalem were all personali-
ties, each in his own right; but
our eye was caught by a distin-
guished looking gentleman
whose badge announced that he
was Jes Reiner Pedersen, editor
of Israel Magazine in Denmark.
During discussion from the floor,
it was not strange to hear him
punctuate a comment with the
words baruch hashem, except
for the fact that he revealed that
he was not Jewish.
The small Jewish communi-
ty in Denmark numbers some
6,400 souls but supports two pa-
pers: one a monthly and the oth-
er a serious quarterly edited by
Mr. Pedersen, who for 18 years
was chairman of the Jutland
Friendship League for Israel
and a standard bearer for the
cause of Israel in Denmark's
public life.
How did he get started? He
was a pupil at a Christian Sun-
day school when, at the age of
five, he heard a lesson about the
return of the Israelis from Baby-
lon to the Holy Land. The story
fired his imagination. Fused
with the birth of modern Zion-
ism, the return became a major
interest in his life. From an ear-
ly age, he used to stand up in
school and lecture students and
teachers alike on Israel. At first,
his information was flimsy; but
he knew more than they did.
Since then, he has become a vo-
racious reader of everything on
Israel that he can lay his hands
on.
By profession, Mr. Pedersen
is a grade school teacher in the
town of Halkvrimmen; being ed-
itor is a volunteer, unpaid occu-
pation. Fortunately, the school
authorities are cooperative and
give him time off when neces-
sary to pursue his pro-Israel ac-
tivities. This is his 10th trip to
Israel.
He sees a dual function in his
task: to provide interesting and
accurate information about Is-
rael and also to set the historic
record straight. The magazine
goes not only to members of the
Jewish community, but also to
a long list of important political,
civic and religious leaders. It is
financed by the Zionist Federa-
tion and by private subscrip-
tions.
Israel Magazine does not give
Israel a white-washing, but
seeks to provide an under-
standing of the country. Yet Mr.
Pedersen has ideas and opin-
