ions. Though not a fundamen-
talist Christian, he understands
the support which the latter
gives to Israel. In their teach-
ings, the Messiah will return
when all Jews are gathered
again in Israel. If the Israeli gov-
ernment continues to surrender
large areas which are histori-
cally identified as part of the
Holy Land, he fears that the fun-
damentalists will be disap-
pointed because the coming of
the Messiah is thereby being de-
ferred; and they could even turn
against Israel.
If Israel is an "occupying pow-
er," he feels, it is only because
the Arabs forced it into that po-
sition by aggressive hostility. He
is opposed to the return of Arab
refugees and tells them that
they must accept having a Di-
aspora just as the Jews have.
His parents were actively en-
gaged in the Danish under-
ground resistance during the
Nazi occupation. They had no
role in the rescue of Jews for the
simple reason that there were
no Jews in their part of the coun-
try.
For 25 years a volunteer in
the Danish Home Guard, Mr. c/
Pedersen is a fervent Danish pa-
triot and sees no conflict with his
vigilant defense of Israel. Un-
friendly publicity for Israel in
the Danish press gets a quick re-
sponse from him; and he reports
the editors are cooperative.
His latest front is reaction to
the decision of the European
Union to boycott the Jerusalem
3000 celebrations and the latest
issue of his magazine contains
appropriate articles. One of his
correspondents is an 82-year-old
Dane who made aliyah four
years ago.
Mr. Pedersen is white-haired
and has a close-cropped white
beard. He has a warm, broad
smile which almost belies his pu-
gnacious tenacity in setting Is-
rael's record straight in
Denmark's public life. He is a de-
voted friend, baruch hashem. ❑

Innovations
In The Desert

JESSICA STEINBERG

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Black tubing stretches for miles
throughout the country, feeding
water to its thriving crops and
verdant orchards. This is but one
of the innovative techniques
used by Israel in greening the
land. Now the Jewish National
Fund (JNF), together with the
Ministry of Agriculture and the
Jewish Agency, is utilizing this
kind of know-how to develop the
Negev, one of Israel's largest
land reserves, in "Action Plan
Negev."
