certain aura in our synagogues as we look inward, seeking re-
newal, re-a rmation and a resurgence of spirit for the New Year: This het'g'ht-
ened sense of awareness, of obligation and of community is enhanced by
our lay prayer leaders and professional cantors alike. They lead us through
the liturgy with familiar melodies and new creations to bring us a sense of
inner-peace and well-being, of spirituality, as they create a mood that am-
plifies our introspection.
All of the cantors we spoke with go through weeks of preparation even af-
ter years of service to their congregations in order to lead the High Holy
Day services to the best of their abilities.
As Jews the world over reflect on the meaning ofRosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur, we hope the following articles bring insight into some individual ef-
forts to make the High Holidays special for all of us.
