The Museum Company is the

sales.
The chain has an annual sales

part.
The agreement was signed be-

1-696 AT VAN DYKE

erusalem (JPFS) — The
Israel Electric Corporation
began work on its $1.6 bil-
lion coal-fired power sta-
tion just south of Ashkelon.
Named after the founder of
Israel's original electric corpo-
ration, Rutenberg, the station
will comprise two units, each
capable of generating 550
megawatts of electricity.
The first of the generators is
expected to be operational by the
winter of 2000.
"This is the technological last
word; electricity that will be pro-
duced comparatively cheaply
and a station that is almost to-
tally free of environmental pol-
lution," Electric Corp. Chairman
Gad Ya'acobi said.
"The Electric Corp. is de-
manding that the infrastructure

infrastructure market in Israel
become the fastest in the entire
Western world," managing di-
rector Rafi Peled said.
The existing Rutenberg sta-
tion has been the cause of con-
troversy between the Electric
Corp. and State Comptroller
Miriam Ben-Porat. The origi-
nal twin 550 MGW-unit power
plant was to be operational by
1986.
But only one unit was put
into operation in August 1990
and the second unit became op-
erational in November 1991.
Last year's State Comptrol-
ler's report criticized both the
Electric Corp. for not meeting
its deadlines, as well as the Elec-
tric Corp.'s board of directors for
not moving the project along
when it became stalled.
