The Party's Over
On every side, Binyamin Netanyahu seems to be
fighting for his right to govern.
ERIC SILVER ISRAEL CORRESPONDENT
W
hat has happened to
Binyamin Netanyahu,
who as a candidate for
Prime Minister glowed
with the power to get things
moving, but since he took office
seems to have fallen asleep in
his chair?" asked Yediot
Aharonot, Israel's biggest-circu-
lated daily paper.
The bewilderment is not un-
common in Israel these days. In
fact, President Ezer Weizman's
invitation this week to meet
with Yassir Arafat at the Is-
raeli's private seaside villa
brought to head swelling dismay
at Mr. Netanyahu's backtrack-
ing and indecision.
icy," Tommy Lapid, a right-wing
commentator, protested in the
Ma'ariv newspaper.
Yet, the 72-year-old Presi-
dent's moves had their results:
a kickstart for the languishing
peace process.
Along with Mr. Arafat's clo-
sure of three minor Palestinian
Authority offices in east
Jerusalem, which allowed Mr.
Netanyahu to claim a victory for
"reciprocity" in keeping agree-
ments, it has given the prime
minister a chance to retrieve his
reputation — from friends as
well as foes.

stand apart at the southern end
of the paved street. One was a lin-
tel of the demolished Temple
gateway. The other was a cor-
nerstone that once dominated the
wall. When it was found two
decades ago by the late Professor
Binyamin Mazar, it was inscribed
in Hebrew: `To the place of trum-
peting." The rest was erased, but
this was where, two millennia
ago, the Jews announced the ap-
proach of their Shabbat. Or
sounded the alarm. ❑

didn't touch them." But the ar-
chaeologists believe that many
more pieces were taken away
and recycled by later Jerusalem
builders. What visitors will see
is probably only 20 percent of the
original debris.
If you look closely, you can spot
the remains of mock pillars, chis-
elled in relief along the upper
frieze of Herod's wall — the same
as those still decorating the king's
other gift to his Jewish subjects,
the Tomb of the Patriarchs in He-

Binyamin Netanyahu reacted negatively to Ezer Weizman's initiatives.
Mr. Weizman's initiative,
however irregular, seems to
have spurred the prime minis-
ter at last to schedule a meeting
of his own with the Palestinian
leader and to resume negotia-
tions on an Israeli redeployment
in Hebron. And it left the prime
minister fuming.
"Not since the establishment
of the state has a President
made such a blatant move out of
step with the Government's pol-
spread to his own party. "We
have to allow the Palestinian
Authority to survive," said
Gideon Ezra, a Likud Knesset
member and former deputy chief
of the Shin Bet internal securi-
ty service. "Among other things,
we must give honor to the per-
son who heads the authority,
who has very serious internal
problems ... We must give the
Palestinians everything that
doesn't cost us in blood." ❑
