Do Research To Find
The Right Doctor

The Sinai Prostate Cancer Program invites you to their First Annual
Symposium: "Brachytherapy for Localized Prostate Cancer: A
Promising New Frontier".

ALISON ASHTON SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

atients who are satisfied
with their doctors usually
are those who take the
most active role in their
own health care. The recent issue
of the National Headache Foun-
dation's Head Lines newsletter
points out the importance of ask-
ing the right questions when seek-
ing a new physician.
Referrals can come from your
own doctor, friends and co-work-
ers. When a doctor recommends
a specialist, find out why he
thinks he or she is good. When
recommendations tome from
friends, find out how many
times they've seen the doctor
and how long they usually
spend in the waiting room.
It's also helpful to interview
a prospective physician; after
all, this is someone who
could be treating you for
years to come. The inter-
view only takes 10 to 15
minutes and should be
done in person. Key issues
to discuss include:
Questions. Does the
doctor welcome ques-
tions from patients
and take time to
answer them
thoroughly?
Medication. Does

This symposium brings together a panel of internationally
recognized experts and innovators in the field. The practicing
health care provider involved with the diagnosis, management and
treatment of prostate cancer will be provided with a
comprehensive overview of this modality, as well as a live,
interactive demonstration.

the doctor use an aggressive ap-
proach, or prescribe medication
only as needed?
Patient education. Does the
physician offer printed materi-
al, videos and
instruction on medication,
self-care and/or medical proce-
dures?
Interviewing the doctor in
person also will give you some
insight into his or her bedside
manner. Ideally, the interview
will take place in the doctor's of-
fice rather than in an examin-
ing room. Also note if the doctor
sits down and focuses on your -
questions or stands and seems
preoccupied during the inter-
view.

Early detection of children's asthma
symptoms could slow the national epidemic

The fastest-growing childhood disease is asthma. In children, it
grew 58 percent from 1982 to 1992 and accounts for a majority of
hospitalizations under 5 years old. Early detection is a critical step
to manage the disease and reduce its severity. Here are tips for
detection.

I High-risk groups. Asthma is twice as com-

mon among boys than girls, and 25 percent
more prevalent among black youngsters.
