FEATURING

Fershtman has since started a
private practice in Bingham
Farms and is regarded as of the
most successful equine lawyers
in the country. She has spoken
at over a dozen national con-
ventions on equine legal issues
and has published over 30 arti-
cles. Among her honors are a
listing in the Best's Directory of
Recommended Insurance Attor-
neys and a recent selection by
the American Bar Association's
Young Lawyer Division as one
of 21 young lawyers who will
guide the profession into the
21st century.

"People should
know how horses
can impact their
lives."

Last year, Ms. Fershtman,
who is due with her first child
in October, pooled all her re-
search over the years into a
book, Equine Law & Horse
Sense. The 166-page paperback,
released nationally in March,
answers a number of horse-re-
lated questions, from "What is
a trespass?" to "What does in-
surance do?" It also provides a
glossary of equine law terms.
The book, says Ms. Fersht-
man, is an invaluable tool for
anyone interested in equestri-
an regulations.
"It's a very substantial $15.2-
billion industry," she says. 'The
need is there — people should
know how horses can impact
their lives."
In addition to maintaining
her practice, Ms. Fershtman
was the first Jewish female to
chair the Young Lawyers Sec-
tion of the State Bar of Michi-
gan. She also serves on the bar's
Board of Commissioners.
Ms. Fershtman hasn't had a
horse on her premises since she
found out she was pregnant last
spring. After the baby is born in
late October, she plans to bring
her horses back to the barn in
Franklin. "I want my [child] to
love horses like me," she says.
But don't expect her to take
a leave of absence from her
booming practice. Ms. Fersht-
man says knowingly, "I bet I'll
be on the phone a couple of
hours after the delivery."
In other words, no horsing
around. ❑
