MARA REINSTEIN JEWISH NEWS INTERN

till mourning over Lollapalooza not making a
tour stop in Detroit this summer?
Fear not, for an alternative to the alternative
is coming — by way of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield. On Wednesday, Aug. 21, the
synagogue is presenting the first annual Shaarey-
Palooza, a potpourri of music, food and entertain-
ment.
Co-chairperson Rena Weintraub promises that
a groovy time will be had by palooza-lovers of all
ages.
"We really want it to be intergenerational," she
says. 'There's going to be something for everyone."
Some the events on the lawn include the Moon-
walk (the jumping machine, not the '80s dance
move), a funhouse and face painting. Entertain-
ment will be provided by "The Postman," James

On the surface, it
seems like the only
things Lollapalooza
and ShaareyPalooza
have in common are
the same suffixes. But
a closer look reveals
that the two events
share more similarities
than John Tesh and
Kenny G. Consider:

Hunter, who's a postman by day and a DJ/enter-
tainer by night. Twisty the Clown will also be on
hand to funny-up the festivities.
All those who work , up an appetite during
ShaareyPalooza can enjoy a barbeque, with kosher
hamburgers, hot dogs and sweet delectables as well.
The idea for the summer festival came about
when the committee decided to expand the annu-
al Men's Club picnic, says Weintraub. Instead of
one sponsor, committee members wanted to get all
the synagogue's affiliates involved.
"This is a collaborative effort," says Weintraub.
"Everyone from the Beth Hayeled nursery school
to the seniors to the young adults are sponsoring
it."
And they're expecting all participants to have
a lolla-fun..
