JEWISH-Tit
deal using a minority advantage
program to which most Ameri-
cans do not have access, the av-
erage American is angry — and
rightfully so.
Ultra-conservative religious
and political demagoguery now
puts teeth into all of this anger
and frustration. It effectively says
to the working guys: "Find some-
one to blame for your problems."
Yes, welfare needs rehabilita-
tion, but the demagogues are us-
ing the flaws in the system to
point a finger at certain groups.
The working guys turn their
anger on those whom they per-
ceive as abusers; therefore racism
is on the rise.
Why the rise in anti-Semi-
tism? Jews are not in a defined
class benefiting from affirmative
action and they are not perceived
as abusers of welfare. But when
you play on the frustrations, fears
and anger of white, gentile Amer-
ica, you unleash dangerous old
prejudices.
When people are feeling so-
cially and economically deprived,
they look for a scapegoat, and the
Jews are the classic scapegoat.
Regarding the divisiveness be-
tween blacks and Jews, Mr. Far-
rakhan's "genius" is his
understanding of a basic human
instinct: If you're hurting, hurt
someone else. Blame the Jews
before we, the African-Ameri-
cans, are blamed.
As Jews, we dare not "shush."
We must take heed of Mr.
Krauthammer's warnings, that
Mr. Farrakhan "does not just go
unpunished. He is feted as a
leader, accorded respect by the
media and the political estab-
lishment" even though he is "a
deeply calculating' anti-Semite.
Mr. Farrakhan's rhetoric
should send chills of recollection
through us all, Jew and Christ-
ian, everyone who has ever
promised: "Never again." O
