Don't Shush

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Marge Schott, Marlon Brando,
Louis Farrakhan, and we won-
der how many others ... behind
closed doors, are spitting anti-Se-
mitic statements.
So often I hear, "Shush, don't
talk about it." Why not?
Anti-Semitism is definitely on
- the rise. Bigotry toward all man-
ner of groups is fueled by new lev-
els of mean-spirited rhetoric.
What is to be gained by silence?
We say "never again." But we
cannot make that promise unless
we are prepared to support it
with action.
Does it matter out of whose
mouth the hate spews? Some ar-
gue yes, I say no. Hate is hate.
Recently Charles Krauthammer,
in a commentary in the Wash-
ington Post, argued that Cincin-
nati Reds owner Marge Schott is
a "rich ignoramus of zero conse-
quence" whose racist comments
are irrelevant.
Mr. Krauthammer also quotes
Al Franken on Marlon Brando:
"Brando is a big fat fool who is
barely coherent on anything, let
alone Jews." Mr. Krauthammer
then points out that our real
problem is Mr. Farrakhan — "a
deeply committed cultivator of
anti-Semitism."
OK, we agree on that. Mr. Far-
rakhan is dangerous, and we
need to determine why he is per-
mitted to carry on what some be-
lieve are illegal activities without
legal consequence. But to dis-
count the hate rhetoric of others
is foolish.
What is wrong in America tc-.
day? Why the rise in anti-Semi-
tism, racism and bigotry? Too
many people are working hard-
er and getting less. They are re-
sentful, perhaps in certain
circumstances rightfully so.
In the last three decades wel-
fare has grown to encompass too
many who just choose to live off
the hard work of others. It has
grown beyond the "safety net"
intended for those who fell on
-short-term hard times.
The average working-class
American is frustrated and an-
gry — and rightfully so. They bag
groceries for minimum wage,
never eating steak, while some-
one on welfare goes through their
checkout line with steak and
more.
Affirmative action has been
grossly misused. Affirmative ac-
tion, as a concept, is appropriate,
but only if it is coupled with the
accountability of scrutiny and is
based on economic need. When
Colin Powell and 0.J.. Simpson
make millions on a TV station
