HERBERT KAUFMAN

With experience comes knowledge,
and for 50 years, Herbert Kaufman
has upheld the standard of service
to the community expected of THE

IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL.

Seymour Riklin of Bloomfield Hills died May
24. He was born in Russia in 1914 and his fami-
ly immigrated when he was 6, settling in De-
troit.
Mr. Riklin graduated from Northern High
School and from Wayne University with a bach-
elor of arts in 1936. He re-
ceived a master's degree in
English from the University of
Chicago in 1940. Mr. Riklin
served as an infantry captain
in the states and in England
and later as an information of-
ficer in Germany during World
War II.
After leaving the service, he
earned a master's degree in
philosophy at the Univeristy of
Michigan. He taught at Uni-
versity of Michigan, Case
Western Reserve University
and Wayne University. At the
latter he was on the staff of the
University Center for Adult
Education.
In 1962, he was appointed
assistant director of Detroit
Adventure, then the Arts
Seymour Riklin
Council of Metropolitan De-
troit. He was a co-founder of
the Detroit Film Theater at the Institute of
Arts and led a literature discussion group at
the Bloomfield Township Library.
During the 1960s, Mr. Riklin moderated and

sunset, like a final farewell, signals a change in
our lives. Inevitably, however, night gives way to
day and we must accept this change. For over 50
years, THE IRA KAUFMAN CHAPEL has served the
Detroit Jewish Community with dedication.

NA'AMAT USA is the Women's Labor Zionist Organization
of America and a partner of NA'AMAT, the largest women's
organization in Israel, working for the improvement of the status
of women.
NA'AMAT USA is active in a number of social, political, legal
and humanitarian causes both in Israel and throughout the
United States.
NA'AMAT dedicates its efforts for day care, vocational train-
ing, legal aid, assisting single-parent families, maintaining clubs
and community centers, conducting study groups and work-
shops, promoting contact and understanding between people
and easing the social integration of new immigrants.

BURTON LEE ALTMAN, 61,

of Detroit, died July 10. Mr. Alt-
man worked for the city of De-
troit in the Real Estate and
Aquisitions Department. He
was a graduate of George Wash-
ington Law School. Mr. Altman
was president of B'nai B'rith
Real Estate and Construction
Unit and was very active with
the Downtown Synagogue as
well as a board member.
Mr. Altman was the loving
son of the late Dr. Albert Alt-
man. He is survived by his
mother and step-father, Clara
and Maurice Robbins of South-
field; sisters and brothers-in-
law, Marjorie and William Kras-
nick of Huntington Woods, Joan
Roth and Leonard Sanders of
New York.
Interment at Clover Hill Park
Cemetery. Contributions may be
made to the Downtown Syna-

her son, Gary Saperstein of
Bloomfield Hills; daughters and
sons-in-law, Linda and Leroy
Helfman of Las Vegas, Nev., Di-
ane Lozon of Grosse Pointe
Park, Paula and Edward De-
Courcy of Ferndale; sisters and
brothers-in-law, Lillian and
Sam Fenton of West Bloomfield,

produced a television series on Public Broad-
casting, gave historical commentary about spe-
cial holidays and was an occasional guest with
J.P. McCarthy on WJR.
Early in his career, he edited several books
and program notes written for the Detroit Sym-
phony.
"Some people have said that
Seymour was a renaissance
man," said his wife Dolorais.
In the mid-1970s, he re-
turned to the classsroom as an
associate professor with the
University Studies-Weekend
College Program and was twice
winner of the Adult Education
Association of Michigan
Teacher of the Year award.
After his official retirement in
1985, Mr. Riklin continued to
teach philosophy for Wayne
State, Henry Ford Community
College, Oakland University
and the Center for Creative
Studies.
Mr. Riklin is survived by his
wife, Dolorais; son, Geoffrey,
both of Bloomfield Hills.
A memorial service will be
held on Oct. 1 at 4 p.m. at the
MacGregor Center on the Wayne State campus.

Mrs. Bachman was a member of

She was the beloved wife of
the late Max Bachman. Mrs.
Bachman is survived by her

of Farmington Hills, Robert and
Barbara of Farmington Hills;
daughter and son-in-law, Sylvia
and Joseph Stone of Evanston,
Ill.; grandchildren, Andrea and
Curt Zuckert, Stephanie Stone
and Daniel Pekarsky, Jennifer
and Thomas Gruger, Denise
Bachman, Laurel Bachman,
Meredith and Martin Frenkel;
five great-grandchildren.

ESTHER BECKER, 87, of
West Bloomfield, died July 11.
Mrs. Becker was a teacher for
the Detroit Public Schools. She
was a member of the Wayne
State Alumni Association and
was active with the Northwest
Child Rescue.
Mrs. Becker was the beloved
wife of the late Maurice Becker.
She is survived by her daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Iris and
Jack Zevin of New York, Sherry
and Steven Haffner of West
Bloomfield; grandchildren,
Sarah, Micah and Alex Zevin,
Arlene and Holly Haffner.
Interment at Machpelah
