From these brainstorming ses-
sions come the ideas for each is-
sue. Then, as the deadline
approaches, they set to work writ-
Then come the marathon ses-
sions when they meet to do the
editing and layouts and get ready
for production. They do all this in
their unofficial working head-
quarters, Oliver's small apartment
in North Frankfurt.
'We use the computer, my din-
ing room table and the floor, and
that's all we need," says Oliver.
Getting the ads is also a do-it-
yourself endeavor, which is main-
ly handled by Iris. She visits
potential advertisers in person,
shows them Chuzpe, tells them all
about it, and tries to interest them
And many are indeed interest-
ed. Frankfurter Rundschau, a
major daily, bought a full page ad
recently. Other advertisers include
retail stores of all sorts. Bank Leu-
mi is also a regular advertiser.
Many advertisers are not Jew-
ish. For instance, the Interna-
tional Bookstore is Arab-owned.
"When I went to see the owner, he
said, Of course I'll buy an ad!'" re-
Besides trying to attract ad-
vertisers, she and the others work
hard to create a lively publication
for their youthful audience.
In addition to special articles in
each issue, there are regular fea-
tures, and some have become pop-
For instance, Filipp writes a
regular column titled "Sex," which
is about sexuality and Judaism.
Oliver, too, writes a regular fea-
ture, a column about the Israeli
economy. "Our goal is to present
serious and well documented ar-
ticles on this subject," says Oliv-
er, a high energy young man who
is a native of Frankfurt.
He reads the Jerusalem Post
regularly and gets information
from the Internet and other
Whether it's an article on the
Israeli economy or Orthodox Ju-
daism, Chuzpe is timely and of-
ten provocative. 'We want to be
informative, to raise current is-
sues and to get people interested
in Jewish life," says Filipp.
Other regular features include
book reviews — often written by
Iris — and movie reviews. Then
there's the back page, which is de-
voted to Jewish jokes. This has be-
come an especially popular staple.
"Everybody reads it," says Fil-
ipp. "People always like to quote
the latest joke in Chuzpe.
But it's no joke that this young
magazine, with a boldness that
befits its name, has had impres-
sive success — indeed, far beyond
what its founders imagined when
they first dreamed up the idea.
"It's a labor of love- and some-
times hate," jokes Oliver. "We
spend months and months doing
this. But it's well worth it." O
