Play, where half the huge inven-
tory is books. In turn, Media Play
offers discounts of up to 40 per-
cent on its books as incentive to
cross-sell CDs, videos, software
and novelty apparel.
"We set out to create an excit-
ing shopping atmosphere," said
Dori Weiner, promotions and ad-
vertising manager at Media Play
in Southfield. Promo gimmicks at
the store included the appearance
of a guest pig for the video release
of Babe.
"We have over 100,000 book
titles, but it's a bonus when you
come into the store and we have
face painting upstairs or a local
author or a pig," Ms. Weiner said.
"As far as differentiating our-
selves from our competition, do
we need to? I think to a certain
extent, any store does," she con-
tinued. "In today's market, espe-
cially in this medium, whether
one feels you have to differentiate
yourself from the competition or
give yourself a push, this is retsil.
In today's retail market, I do think
(events) are necessary." El

That is hardly the case, said
Jennifer Wolfertz, spokesperson
for Barnes & Noble. She noted
that there are more than 150,000
titles on average in their super-
stores.
"We bring first-time book buy-
ers in. With more book buyers, di-
versity among booksellers is good
for the industry," she said.
Last year's $2 billion revenue,
an 18-percent increase over 1994,
earned Barnes & Noble the title
of nation's largest bookseller. Like
its superstore competitors, the
chain offers community events
like storytelling for children, au-
thor book signings, poetry read-
ings and seminars.
In recent years, bookseller su-
perstores have broadened their
inventory to include music CDs
and cassettes. These lower-mar-
gin items help Barnes & Noble
and Borders to offer a cross-shop-
ping experience and, of course, to
