THIS SUMMER FEATURING THE FURNITURE OF TERESA SWAM

Calendars Satisfy
The Eyes, The Soul

A Jewish calendar, with its dates
for holidays, candlelighting times,
and weekly Torah readings, serves
as a daily link with our heritage.
Today's Jewish calendars often
come with beautiful illustrations,
interesting commentaries and in-
spiring quotations. A look at some
of the calendars released during
the past year can truly be a feast
for the eyes and the soul.
For example, the Jewish Cal-
endar 1996, from Hugh Lauter
Levin Associates (distributed in
Canada by Distican), is richly il-
lustrated with priceless Judaica.
This year the treasures in this wall
calendar are from the collection of
the Jewish Museum in Prague.
Among the stunning objects
displayed in the calendar is a fruit-
shaped, 19th-century silver spice
box that originates from Slovakia.
Equally impressive is a circa 1840
parcel-gilt etrog container from
Vienna. Thee are also lovely paint-
ings; colorful, embroidered tex-
tiles; and ornately illuminated
manuscript pages, all lovingly cre-
ated as a celebration of Jewish life.
Pomegranate Publishers this
year offered Illuminations, A Jew-
ish Calendar, with fabulous illus-
trations from Arthur Szyk's
famous Haggadah in the Library
of Congress.
Among the memorable images
from the Haggadah used in this
calendar are the Four Sons, Hal-
lelujah, the Exodus, the Four
Questions and the Passover
Table, all of which are suitable for
framing.
Each illustration is accompa-
nied by an informative commen-
tary on some of its artistic,
symbolic and historic elements.
With these marvelously detailed,
brilliantly-colored Haggadah
pdintings, Arthur Szyk (1894-
1951) revived the art of medieval
manuscript illumination and
earned international fame.
Mr. Szyk completed his Hag-
gadah in 1939, after seven years
of work. It was dedicated to King
George V of England. Mr. Szyk
was called "the greatest illumi-
nator since the 16th century" by
historian Cecil Roth, who said
that the artist had integrated "cal-
ligraphy, illumination, illustra-
tion and narrative into one
harmonious whole."
A Time To Sing and Dance, the
calendar of the Jewish Museum
of New York, comes from Uni-
verse Publishers. Its joyful and
varied illustrations seem to re-
sound with music and dance.
Ranging from the 18th centu-
ry to the 1970s, the images in this
calendar cover biblical, historical
and contemporary themes in a
wide assol tment of styles.
The calendar gives dates
for holidays through the year
2000. O
