PERILS page 61

proper mechanics of falling Dr.
Jaffee notes that the most corn-
mon serious injury for skaters oc-
curs to the wrist because people
land with their arms.
Dr. Jaffee agrees with In-Line
Skater magazine that skaters
should remember to land on
their knees when falling. The
wrists should be at an angle out
in front of the skater to avoid a
stiff-arm stop, and the heel of the
hand should be pointed down-
ward with the fingers pointed up-
ward. Skaters should then slide
down to their elbows, but keep
the chest off the ground. By hav-
ing four points of contact, the per-
son should decrease the severity
of any injury, Dr. Jaffee con-
cluded.
"Treatment varies, but the
first thing a person should do is
find out where the pain is. If
there is a neck or head injury,
others should call for help im-
mediately and not move the vic-
tim," Dr. Kushner said.
"Most scrapes or abrasions can
be flushed out with cool water
and a mild soap to avoid infec-
tion. The area should be kept im-
mobilized; and ice, wrapped in
layers of toweling, should be ap-
plied to the scraped area on and
off for four-six hours. First-aid
cream can then be applied, and
a nonstick gauze bandage should
cover the wound," Dr. Kushner
prescribed.

Pass Out!

Sister feels dizzy. Brother says
it is nothing to be alarmed over.
The problem is that Sister is also
weak, nauseous and feels faint.
She is suffering from heat ex-
haustion or heat prostration due
to her excessive exposure to the
hot sun.
According to Dr. Alan E.
Nourse, author of the Family
Medical Guide, heat exhaustion
is relatively minor but sometimes
an alarming disorder that can be
remedied by staying in the shade
and lying down with the head
slightly lower than the feet.
Most of the time, the body
needs to cool down and a person
needs to replenish his water and
salt supply by sipping small
amounts of cool salt water for up
to an hour. Dr. Nourse stresses
that gulping large quantities of
cold water could induce stomach
irritation and vomiting.
So how can your family beat
the perils of summer and avoid
massive bug bites, burns, scrapes
and heat exhaustion? Dr. Kush-
ner sums it up:
"Use common sense; take pre-
ventative cautions; throw an ice
pack in the cooler; bring ban-
dages; carry some first-aid oint-
ment or make sure you have a
first-aid kit in the car. These
things aren't going to prevent all
injuries but can go a long way to-
ward making summer more en-
joyable."
