The Relentless Pursuit of Perfection
112-inch middle blocker. "The
competition will be tough with
the California teams," she says.
"They took the gold and the sil-
ver in the Maccabi regionals last
year."
Wiener plays volleyball on the
Madonna Crusader Juniors, a
club team, as well as on the ju-
nior varsity team at Birmingham
Groves High School.
Marla Feingold is 14, 5 feet
tall, and back for her second Mac-
cabi Games. She will be playing
the setter position. She also is in
her second year of playing on the
Birmingham Berkshire Middle
School volleyball team.
Other players on the team are
Jennifer Weinberg, 15, 5 feet 3
inches, playing setter for her sec-
ond year, Rachael Klein, 16, 5 feet
3 inches, setter, second year Mar-
ci Cohen, 15, 5 feet, setter, second
year; Allison Surowitz, 15, 5 feet
5 inches, outside hitter, fourth
year; Nichole Siegel, 16, 5 feet 5
inches, outside hitter, second
year.
The boys team, on the other
hand, has an experience problem.
All of the boys, except one, are
playing Maccabi volleyball for the
first time.
Historically, Detroit's boys vol-
leyball teams have done better
than the girls team, but the
coaches think this year may be
different. But, Bertin says, "with
enough work and practice, they
will be good candidates to medal."
Both the boys and girls teams
practice every Thursday evening
at the Maple-Drake Jewish C6m-
munity Center. Practices may
to twice weekly in July, says
Bertin. .
The only experienced player
for the boys team is Rob Deroven,.
16, a 5-foot-10-inch middle block-
er who is back for his fourth year.
Deroven, a North Farmington
High School sophomore, plays
volleyball in a YMCA Sunday
league and is in his third year
playing for a United States Vol-
leyball Association team.
"Rob is an exceptional and
great all-around volleyball play-
er; he's the male counterpart to
Sarah," says Bertin. "He has ex-
traordinary strength. When he
hammers the ball, you can't fol-
low it; that's how hard he hits it."
Deroven loves Maccabi. "The
experience is amazing; I would
not give it up for anything," he
says. "Leaving town and meeting
people from other states and
countries is amazing."
As far as his team's prospects
are concerned, Deroven expects
a struggle. "I'm the only return-
ing player," he says. "It's me and
a bunch of rookies. We need a lot
of practice, but there is always a
chance of a medal."
Two of Deroven's rookie team-
mates are brothers Steven and
Greg Galperin. Steven is 15, 5
feet 6 inches, attends Walled
Lake Western High School and
plays setter. His brother Greg, 13,
5 feet 2 inches, is an eighth-grad-
er at Walled Lake Middle School
and is a back-row specialist.
Greg likes the teamwork as-
pect of volleyball, which may be
helping his relationship with his
brother. "We haven't always
agreed on everything," he says,
"but now we're working togeth-
er."
After making last year's Mac-
cabi volleyball team and choos-
ing to play Maccabi basketball
instead, Adam Babcock, 14, 5 feet
10 inches, will join the volleyball
team this year as an outside hit-
ter.
While admitting that basket-
ball is his favorite sport, Babcock
is giateful that volleyball will give
him another chance to have the
Maccabi experience.
Other players on the boys team
include Howard Dworman, 13, 5
feet 5 inches, setter, Daniel Katz,
15, 5 feet 4 inches, setter; Jesse
Bernstein, 15, 5 feet 11 inches,
outside hitter.
The volleyball teams won't be
inexperienced at the coaching po-
sitions. Skeegan has been in-
volved with Maccabi volleyball
since 1984 when Detroit hosted
the JCC North American Mac-
cabi Youth Games.
He also coaches tournament
teams within the Michigan High
School Boys Volleyball Associa-
tion, a U.S. Volleyball Association
affiliate
As a 13-year-old, Skeegan
started playing volleyball at his
Pittsburgh high school. He con-
tinues to play in the Walled Lake
Parks and Recreation Volleyball
League and organized an over-35
league at the Royal Oak YMCA.
Skeegan participates in the na-
tional games of the United States
Volleyball Association in age-
group competition. Last year, he
played in San Antonio in the
United States Senior Olympics.
Bertin has been playing com-
petitive volleyball since 1974
when he helped start the B'nai
B'rith Volleyball League. He now
plays and manages in the Walled
Lake Community Education
League. Bertin has been coach-
ing Maccabi since 1990.
Since that time, Detroit has
medaled every time at the North
American Maccabi Youth
Games. ❑
