l
remember my first day of He-
brew school. I wasn't actual-
ly enrolled, but attended as
my friend's guest. Having no
experience in reading or writing
Hebrew, I was handed crayons
and paper to keep me busy while
the students were taught their
lesson. I thought Hebrew school
was great. I went home and
begged my parents to send me.
Once enrolled, I never had the
opportunity to color again dur-
ing class. However, I stuck with
it and had my bat mitzvah. Un-
fortunately, like many Hebrew
students who don't continue af-
ter the age of 13, I didn't retain
much of what I learned.
Periodically, non-Jewish
friends ask me questions about
my religion. It bothers me that
I can't tell them the stories be-
hind some of the holidays or ex-
plain where certain traditions
originate. This prompted me to
take Introduction To Judaism
through Temple Israel.
The 11-week class, taught by
Temple Israel's four rabbis and
cantor, has covered everything
from theology, history and
stereotypes to the holidays, Jew-
ish life-cycle events and a visit
to the Holocaust Museum. Sev-
eral temples and synagogues
throughout metro
Detroit offer similar
courses.
While the course
is open to anyone, it
is recommended for
individuals consid-
ering conversion and
for interfaith couples.
Many of my fellow
students are marry-
ing out of their faith.
Some are converting,
while others just
want to understand

gion. There are even

DATING DYNAMICS
When it comes to footing the
bill on a date, there are no Ten
Commandments. While chival-
ry was once the norm, the pen-
dulum now swings both ways.
"Eye" spoke with several
young adults regarding their
thoughts on women offering to
pay on a date.
Here are some re-
sponses:
"I think it's cool
when a woman of-
fers. The first date
I wouldn't let her
pay. After that, I
would probably
pay for more than
she would. That's
just what I'm
comfortable with."
