Neeme Jarvi
Addresses Group
Neeme Jarvi, music director of
the Detroit Symphony Orches-
tra, will head Birmingham Tem-
ple's third Encounter, an all-day
cultural event on Monday, May
20, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Mr. Jarvi will discuss his ar-
eas of expertise, his history as a
citizen of Tallin, Estonia, and his
experiences there and in the
United States. He will respond
to questions from the group.
The $25 registration fee in-
cludes continental breakfast and

sent "Pearls of Yiddish Song"
with Zalmen Mlothk, on Sunday,
June 9, at Maple-Drake at 2 p.m.
Mr. Mlotek will show how
American culture influenced Yid-
dish music and how Yiddish mu-
sic influenced American song
writers and theater production.

Berman Award
Nominations
Nominations are being accepted
for the ninth annual Berman
Award for Outstanding Profes-
sional Service.
Created by Mandell L. and
Madeleine Berman, the award
will go to a Jewish communal
professional employed by the
Jewish Federation or one of its
agencies.
The award, which will be pre-
sented at the August meeting of
Federation's Board of Governors,
is intended to promote and re-
ward extraordinary profession-
al service. The Bermans
established the award through
the Federated Endowment Fund
of the Jewish Federation.
Nominees for the Berman
Award must have worked in the
Detroit Jewish community a
minimum of five years. They
must have demonstrated the
highest professional standards
in their chosen field, made a con-
tribution to the general good of
the Jewish community and dis-
played leadership and innova-
tion in their profession.
Nominations for the Berman
Award may be submitted by let-
ter to the selection committee no
later than June 28. A committee
of lay leaders and professional
colleagues will select the award
winner. Names of the nominees
will remain confidential, and
they may be renominated in sub-
sequent years.

Advocacy Day
In Lansing
On Wednesday, May 22, a group
of metro area activists will join
members of 13 Michigan com-
munities at a statewide Jewish
Advocacy Day. The forum will
take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
at the state capitol in Lansing.
The event, sponsored by the
Michigan Jewish Conference will
feature meetings with top Engler
administration officials and lead-
ers of the Michigan House and
Michigan Senate as well as vis-
its to the offices of Detroit area
legislators. Advocacy Day is
chaired by Detroiter Jim August,
president of the Michigan Jew-
ish Conference.
A car pool has been organized
for local participants which will
depart from the Congregation
Shaarey Zedek parking lot at
8:30 a.m. on May 22. There is a
$10 registration fee which in-
cludes lunch at the Lansing City
Club.

Council Plans
Annual Dinner
The Young Israel Council of Met-
ropolitan Detroit sixth annual
joint dinner will be Monday,
June 3, 6 p.m. at the Maple-
Drake JCC.
Young Israel of Greenfield will
honor Larry and Pearl Schon,
members for nine years. Mr.
Schon has been president of the
shul for the past two years. Both
are active in Jewish organiza-
tions, including Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah.
Young Israel of West Bloom-
field will honor Bev and Bill
Leuchter, who have been affili-
ated with the shul since its in-
ception, housing the first
Shabbaton, which led to the es-
tablishment of the weekly
minyan.
Dr. and Mrs. Robert M. Starr,
founding members of Young Is-
rael of Southfield, are to be hon-
ored for their outstanding
contributions to the community,
including devoting much time
and energy to the betterment of
the shul.
Tribute will be paid to Young
Israel of Oak-Woods for over 40
years of service given to the corn-
munity.
