comes into the Old City will pass
by this spot," said David Her-
melin, who co-owns the Phoenicia
Glass Co. with Mr. Davidson.
"When you enter the wall on the
right-hand side, before you get to
the steps to the Dome of the Rock,
there is an expanse of land. All
of that entire area is the Second
Temple archeological park. By the
time they complete the excava-
tion, it will be made gorgeous."
Several Detroit leaders will at-
tend the dedication of the park
and adjoining orientation garden
during the William Davidson
Leadership Mission this summer.
Other activities, including dis-
cussions with Israeli leaders, a vis-
it to Detroit's Partnership 2000
region in the Central Galilee and
a visit to the Phoenicia Glass Fac-
tory, are planned as well. The mis-
sion will also meet with the prime
minister and the mayors of the
Central Galilee

.

Mr. Davidson, past Allied Jew-
ish Campaign chairman who un-
derwrote the William Davidson
Challenge Fund for the 1996
Campaign, said he hopes the mis-
sion will "strengthen the people-
to-people partnership between
Israelis and our Detroit Jewish
community, which has been the
vanguard of support for the Jew-
ish state.
"This is very, very significant,"
said Mr. Hermelin. "Bill has al-
ways had an outstanding corn-
mitment to Israel and has
played a significant role in the
building up of Israel through
economic development and
through helping point the coun-
try in a good economic direction.
The glass factory alone has cre-
ated a great deal of employment.
Bill is one of the leading Amer-
ican investors in Israel. It's ap-
propriate that his name is linked
with this project."
