Mr. Worrell said he has tried
to bring in speakers of national
and international repute since
the luncheon series began in
1984. Last year, former British
Prime Minister Margaret
Thatcher spoke to a sold-out
crowd, joining others before her,
like Jimmy Carter and Betty
Ford.
He was also able to coax Dr.
Hanan Ashrawi, commissioner
general, Palestinian Independent
Commission for Citizens' Rights,
to speak last year. After that, Mr.
Worrell said, "It was my deter-
mination that we make every ef-
fort to attract an individual of
great stature who would present
the Israeli point of view. rd been
working on it for months when
this possibility presented itself"
Ms. Artzi-Pelossof was a nat-
ural, but Mr. Worrell had to work
"aggressively" through her pub-
lisher, Alfred Knopf, to bring her
to Detroit, her only stop in the
metro area during her book tour.
"I think it's going to be very im-
pressive and very moving. She is
so young but so eloquent," he
says.
Following the noon lunch, Ms.
Artzi-Pelossof, who lived with her
grandfather and grandmother for
a time, will speak about Prime
Minister Rabin, the political cli-
mate in Israel, the status of the
peace process, and most likely,
the effect of the March bus bomb-
ings on the process her grandfa-
ther began and on the upcoming
Israeli election.
After her talk, she will answer
written questions from the au-
dience and sign copies of her
book. ❑
