Sinai Hospital Health and Fitness Programs, Support Groups and Special Services

Health and Fitness Support Programs

Arthritis Aquatics

This Arthritis Foundation Aquatics program is a
recreational program provided in a heated pool.
Participants are led by trained personnel through
a series of specially designed exercises which, with
the aid of the water's buoyancy and resistance, can
help improve joint flexibility and relieve pain and
stiffness. There are two levels — basic and plus.
These courses run two times a week for six weeks
at Sinai Physical and Occupational Therapy at
Crown Pointe, 25900 Greenfield Road, Suite 110,
Oak Park, MI 48237. Class size is limited and the
fee is $50. For more information, please call

Arthritis Self Help Course (ASHC)

Co-sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation and
Sinai's Department of Physical Medicine and Re-
habilitation, ASHC is a six-week program for in-
dividuals with arthritis and others close to them.
Topics covered include energy conservation, exer-
cise, pain control, relaxation and nutrition. A $20
fee supports the Arthritis Foundation. For more

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

This state-of-the-art rehabilitation program has
been developed for those who have had bypass
surgery, a heart attack or have been diagnosed for
heart disease. This ongoing program is held at
Sinai's Blumberg Health Center and is covered by
most insurance programs. For information, call
313493-6333.

Cardiovascular Fitness Evaluation

The Cardiovascular Fitness Evaluation has been
developed for individuals who want to find out their
overall fitness level. The evaluation includes blood
work, medical history, body fat analysis, treadmill
fitness test and exercise prescription. The program
is held at Sinai Hospital's Cardiovascular Fitness
Center in the Blumberg Health Center. For fee

Childbirth and Family Life Education

Sinai Hospital offers numerous classes in childbirth
and family life education both at Sinai Hospital and
at various settings in the community. Among the
classes offered are Prepared Childbirth, VBAC
(Vaginal Birth After Caesarean), CPR, Parenting
and many others. To receive a brochure with com-

Diabetes Education

The Diabetes Outpatient Education Program will
help the person with diabetes, their family and sig-
nificant others learn about diabetes and needed
self-management skills. The program fee is covered
by Medicare, Medicaid, HAP and several other in-
surance programs. Professionals can participate in
this program and receive CEU credit. For more in-
formation or to register for the Diabetes Outpatient
Education Program, call 810-646-9898.

Freedom from Smoking

Sinai Hospital co-sponsors "Freedom from Smok-
ing," a program of the American Lung Association
of Michigan. The eight-week program begins with
a free orientation. Participants who wish to con-
tinue with the program pay $65 following orienta-
tion. To register or to find out the date of the next
orientation session, call SinaiSource at 1-800-

Health and Wellness Program

This program is designed for those who don't have
heart disease and want to get started on a plan to
improve their overall fitness. For fee and other
information, contact the Cardiovascular Fitness
Center at 313-493-6333.

People with Arthritis Can Exercise (P.A.C.E.)

This eight week course is open to anyone with
arthritis or muscle and joint stiffness who might
benefit from a well-paced, supervised exercise pro-
gram taught by a certified instructor. This class
combines exercise and health education with top-
ics such as relaxation techniques and pain man-
agement. This course runs from February 20 - April
11, 1996 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday and
Thursday evenings. Classes are held at the Sinai
Physical and Occupational Therapy at Crown
Pointe in Oak Park. The cost of this class is $65
which includes a manual. Pre-registration is re-
quired and class size is limited. For more informa-

NICU Parents Support Group

This support group is directed to parents of infants
in Sinai Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
(NICU).

Pregnancy Loss Support Group

Pregnancy Loss Support Groups will be held at the
Bloomfield Township Library. For more informa-

Sinai "Joint Use Not Abuse" Course

This two hour course will include presentation of
a videotape demonstrating energy conservation
and joint protection principles and how to incor-
porate them into your daily life. Various pieces of
adaptive equipment will be displayed and discussed.
To register for this class, please contact Michelle
Labbe at 810-968-3900. This class is offered free to
the community.

Pregnancy After Loss Support Group

The Pregnancy After Loss Support Group is avail-
able by request and meetings are held when enough
families are interested. For information, please call

Schizophrenics Anonymous

Support Groups

This support group is directed to schizophrenic
individuals. For information, call 313-493-6850.
Location: Sinai Hospital Gargaro Building, corner
of McNichols and Greenfield
Time: 3-4 p.m.

Adult Caregiver Support Group

This group offers support to adult caregivers who
are caring for a loved one who is sick or disabled.
Meetings are held from 3-4:30 p.m. at the the
Jewish Community Center (JCC) Maple/ Drake
Bldg., Functional Recovery Program classroom,
second floor, 6600 West Maple, West Bloomfield,
and at Sinai Hospital in the West Conference Room
(near Zuckerman Auditorium).

Stepping Stones Stroke Club

The Stepping Stones Stroke Club is directed at in-

Premarital Counseling Classes

Monthly classes are offered at a variety of subur-
ban locations. Attendance at this class meets the
requirements for the certificate needed for a
Michigan marriage license. HIV and other sexual-
ly transmitted diseases will be discussed. Couples
will receive some free gifts and information about
Sinai services during the class. Registration is avail-
able by telephone at 313-493-6086 and then choose
the Childbirth Education option. There is a $20 fee
per couple for this class.

Living with Cancer

This support group is directed to individuals with
a diagnosis of cancer, their families and friends. A
series of six weekly sessions with guests speakers
