SHIRLEE BLOOM'S
TRADITIONAL PASSOVER
CARRYOTTE MENU
I KOSHER FOR PASSOVER FOOD PRODUCTS IN OUR PREPARATION
Kow of West Bloomfield ... When
the snowbirds return from the
South in about a month, the fig-
ure is expected to reach over
1,000 pounds ... Little wonder
that all the fish purveyors want
Gene's business.
Yes, it serves Chinese food, too
... But nobody, not even fish
restaurants, sell this amount of
whitefish.
CONGRATS ... to Dee "Do-
lores" Brode (Seymour) ... on her
birthday ... to Lois and Edward
Glick ... on their 33rd anniversary
... and to Carol and Shel Klaiman
... on their 27th anniversary ...
Sisters Lois and Carol are the
daughters of Marian Goldman.
FIRST YEAR since opening,
last March 9, was quietly ob-
served by Steve's Back Room of
West Bloomfield Middle Eastern
restaurant on Orchard Lake
Road, north of 14 Mile in the
Robin's Nest Shopping Plaza ...
Owners Steve Khalil and Barney
Ales are going into year No. 2
with even more zest, as plans con-
tinue for another banner season.
MEMBERS OF the Michigan
team going to Berlin in Septem-
ber for the Culinary Olympics are
He's a back-home
kind of guy.
... Randy Emert, sous chef at Pike
Street Restaurant; Randy Smith,
executive chef at Jackson Coun-
try Club in Jackson; Doug Ganes,
sous chef at Grosse Pointe Yacht
Club; and David Iselli, executive
chef at Paint Creek Country Club
in Lake Orion.
Michigan team manager is Joe
Beato, chef/owner of Il Centro
Restaurant; and coach is Mario
Etamad, executive chef for
Machus at Palace of Auburn
Hills.
Among 15 on the national
team will be Derin Moore, Pike
Street executive chef; Matthew
Bronski, sous chef at Loon Riv-
er Cafe in Sterling Heights; and
Kristin Jablonski, teacher in the
culinary program at Wayne-
Westland Schools.
THOSE HEALTHY break-
fasts, lunches and dinners at
Sneakers in the Franklin Racquet
Club on Northwestern Highway,
between 12 Mile and Inkster,
aren't just for the members ... The
surprisingly large menu is for the
general public also ... a fact that
many folks don't know about.
And what a fine place Franklin
Racquet Club is for birthday, bar
and bat mitzvah parties So
much for the kids (and adults) to
do in a bevy of sports activity ...
even indoor swimming, basket-
ball, tennis, etc. ... a lot of fun.
HARRY AND SYLVIA
Granader, founders of Ronald Mc-
Donald House, and Camp Mak-
a-Dream at Roeper School in
Bloomfield Hills, join astronaut
James Lovell, commander of
Apollo 13, at the Atheneum Ho-
tel in Greektown, April 20, in re-
ceiving a Golden Apple Award at
Roeper's fifth annual gala event.
Harry and Sylvia were active
for years in the Detroit chapter
at Children's Hospital ... Their
son, Gary, took over the family's
part in McDonald House's histo-
ry, eventually becoming board
chairman and also serving on the
national board.
In the past five years, the
Granaders created Camp Mak-
A-Dream in Montana for children
with cancer ... It was finally com-
pleted last summer when about
45 children took part in a trial
week ... with special ramps and
physical needs for children who
are seriously ill ... a big thrill for
Harry and Sylvia as they watched
the youngsters smile.
KING CRAB four-course din-
ner at four of Matt Prentice's
Unique Restaurant Corporation
operations, March 18 to April 30,
are $19.95 per person after 5 p.m.
... America on N. Woodward in
Royal Oak; Relish on W. 12 Mile
in Farmington Hills; Sebastian's
Grill on W. Big Beaver in Troy's
Somerset Collection; and Tratto-
ria Bruschetta in the Hotel
Baronette on Novi Road at 12
Mile.
HUMANITARIAN AWARD
this year will be given to Morry
Cohen ... by Variety — The Chil-
dren's Charity, at its Gold Heart
Ball, May 10, in Dearborn's Ritz-
Carlton.
VINO PICKS ... by Roger
Petri, director of operations at
Mac & Ray's:
J. Lohr Chardonnay Monterey
Riverstone 1994. Wow! this wine
has it all. Toasted oak flavor with
a complex array of honey, pear,
spice and a nutty tone, this wine
would stand up to any full-fla-
vored food. It sells for around $12.
***** Outstanding.
Villa Mt. Eden Zinfandel 1993.
Medium-to full-bodied, this zin-
fandel is packed with berry-like
fruit and a gentle amount of spice
that pairs it well with such dish-
es as spicy pastas and stir frys
while being hearty enough to
stand up to a juicy filet mignon.
About $10. **** Excellent.
ACCORDING TO Lou DeCil-
lis, who puts out the Savino Ital-
ian Sorbet made here, President
Clinton and wife Hillary are big
fans of his fat-free and no choles-
terol products.
He says their favorite flavors
are Savino Michigan Cherry and
Savino Red Raspberry, both of
which are among those sold
throughout the Midwest and mid-
Atlantic states, with all having
received rave reviews from food
critics, food editors and con-
sumers across the country.
Lou had eight pints of each
flavor delivered to the presi-
dent while he was here last
week.
