Jones on Northwestern Highway,
operated by Joan Wittenberg and
owned by Joan and Dr. Don Wit-
tenberg... The "bartender" con-
cocted mixtures made with
strawberries and bananas, and
garnished them with fresh mint
leaves ... The staff exuded health;
perhaps it was from the symbol-
ic green (growth) and brown
(earth) colors. Or, it could have
been from the health-food store
on the premises ... It was one of
those wonderful restaurants peo-
ple wish would open again.
/-j La Rotisserie at Hyatt Regency
in Dearborn was an elegant room
made even more so by a young
lady who played the harp and
would, if asked, bring it over to
your table and sing for you ... Ser-
vice came in teams and was as
well turned out as the room itself
I \D ... If you desired, they would cook
at the table with blue flames all
around.
The Old Mill on Dixie High-
way, owned by John Laffrey and
Al Werthman, featured a rustic
Early American atmosphere,
complete with six different din-
ing areas, including the Tin Pan
Alley Tavern ... It combined the
quaint charm of a rough-hewn
English establishment with high
ceilings, beautiful chandeliers and
a huge seating capacity of 500 ...
In addition, it provided dinner en-
tertainment excursions to near-
by Pine Knob, and during the
football season, the Pontiac Sil-
verdome.
Weary shoppers at the East-
ern Market on Winder discovered
the Push Cart as a place to rest
their shopworn bodies, relax and
sample some fresh-from-the-mar-
ket goodies ... Some Italian spe-
cialties enhanced the menu, and
Trader Vic's had
intimacy.
the casual dress of the waiters
and waitresses helped create an
atmosphere perfect for a break in
Market Day ... The Push Cart's
Italian -style veal came highly rec-
ommended, as did the salad bar,
with the vegetables straight from
market to you.
The Red Cedars, owned by Jack
and Lenore Freed and Ray
Bresler, was an intimately lit es-
tablishment done in plush red
decor ... As you entered, the
padded bar was to your left, the
small dance floor to the right ...
Reservations were especially rec-
ommended for lunch, when the
rest of the restaurant overflowed
with the business crowd ... The ta-
bles tended to be small and inti-
mate, seating two to four along the
balcony next to the dance area.
Chef Doug Grech parlayed his
success at the Pontchartrain and
on television (Duglass Duglass)
into a highly successful restau-
rant of his own ... At Restaurant
Duglass on Southfield Road (soon
to be East Side Mario's), the
French cuisine he helped popu-
larize around Detroit was served
in a properly Parisian atmos-
phere ... Nouvelle cuisine may
have been the word of the day,
but you could still find a little of
the butter-and-cream school of
cooking here ... It was a good place
for the seriously aspiring
gourmets to test their mettle.
The Sheik on East Lafayette,
owned by Esther Michaels at the
edge of Detroit's Greektown,
looked like it was once somebody's
house ... That is, of course, be-
cause it once had been and was
run as though its patrons were
family ... There was no wine or
liquor in the house proper where
the eating went on, but should
anyone insist, someone would
duck over to the adjacent bar and
fetch some ... Food was general-
ly high quality and well prepared
... A wide variety of Middle East-
ern specialties were usually
lighter than those served in the
Greek restaurants around the
corner.
CONGRATS ... to Jack
Halperin, former owner of
Halperin's Men's Wear ... on his
100th birthday.

against cancer is set for March

Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute
(former MCF) and feature Nor-
ma Jean Bell and the All Stars.

erty of former Wing Hong of
