who confirmed my worst suspi-
cion. Jack did have a severe form
of HCM and never played foot-
ball on a competitive level again.
Being a doctor gives a person
the chance to help a lot of people.
Sometimes hurt gets mixed with
the help. I felt sad that Jack had
to give up a promising career in
sports, but pressing it would have
probably killed him in his youth.
Every once in a while we hear
about a well-conditioned athlete
who dropped dead at the peak of
his game. Some of them had
HCM.
You might say tome, "Who are
you to make the choice?" Perhaps
that individual would rather die
playing his or her sport than live
without it. My responsibility is to
report on the safety of that indi-
vidual's tolerating the stress of
the sport he or she desires to play.
I don't think a 17-year-old has
the maturity to make that deci-
sion, and I don't believe anyone
can place a dollar figure on how
much a person's life might be
worth in the hope of gaining
fame and fortune on the playing
field. ❑

Hospitals
Owed Money
Jerusalem — Health Minister
Ephraim Sneh told the Cabinet
the four public-health funds owe
the government hospitals and
that the solution to their financial
crisis is for the Treasury to cov-
er the debts.
The directors of the government
hospitals have threatened to
launch a hunger strike in front of
the Finance Ministry unless it cov-
ers the debts. The health funds
are unable to pay the government
hospitals due to a shortfall of hun-
dreds of millions of shekels in
health-tax collections by the Na-
tional Insurance Institute.
Sneh is to meet with Finance
Minister Avraham, but sources in
the Treasury denied it owes the
government hospitals or the
health funds any money. Accord-
ing to the National Health Insur-
ance Law, the Finance Ministry
must cover any shop Lfall between
health taxes and the basket of
health services the insurers are
expected to provide to all residents.
A Treasury spokesman said it
had committed itself to pay to cov-
er this shortfall. The Health Min-
istry claims the Treasury must
transfer some funds to the gov-
ernment hospitals.
The state hospitals have al-
ready begun to dig into their
emergency stores for medical
equipment, which is a potential-
ly dangerous situation.
They have already asked non-
urgent cases not to come to their
emergency rooms.
