expect a report about Jack's play-
ing the last game.
"Tell the coach he can play,"
the father said. "I'll call and say
Jack has the flu and keep him out
of the game. He won't even suit
up, I promise you."
I'm afraid I didn't trust that
promise.
When the coach called, I told
him the parents instructed me
not to give a report to anyone.
"I don't want a report," the
coach said. "Just tell me. Can he
play?"
"Ask me some questions," I
said to the coach.
There was silence, and I
thought I could hear the coach
thinking.
"What questions?" he mum-
bled. Then he said, "What would
you do if you were me?"
"I think you know that," I an-
swered.
"I guess I have to keep him out
of his last game," the coach
replied.
I received an irate telephone
call from Jack's father a couple of
days later, implying that I had
ruined his son's life. College
scouts would be at the last game,
and Jack had to show them what
he could do. He added a few ex-
pletives and informed me that I
would never see Jack again, ex-
cept on television as a college or
professional football star.
It was then I knew I was right
not to have trusted the father's
promise. I never saw Jack or his
parents again. I heard they did

in young athletes, and an
echocardiogram is the best way
to diagnose it.
The echocardiogram on pa-
tients with HCM often indicates
excess thickness of the heart wall,
but many conditioned athletes
like Jack show the same thing
without having HCM. The con-
dition can be inherited, and when
Jack's mother told me she had a
brother who died without warn-
ing before age 30, I became very
concerned.
I suggested the parents get an-
other opinion before passing on
the echocardiogram. At that point
I felt I could not clear Jack to play
football again without an echocar-
diogram to prove he did not have
HCM. They said they would con-
sider another evaluation after
Jack got his scholarship and in-
structed me to tell no one of my
suspicion.
I told them that Jack's coach
would be calling me and would
