Hermelins Host
President Clinton
PHIL JACOBS EDITOR
When the late prime minister of
Israel, Yitzhak Rabin, signed a
peace treaty with PLO leader
Yassir Arafat, David Hermelin,
a guest of the White House, wit-
nessed the historic event. And
when Mr. Rabin was buried just
over a year later, Mr. Hermelin
was once again at President
Clinton's side, this time in Is-
rael.
So, it was no wonder, as the
campaign trail gets into full
swing, that David and Doreen
Hermelin, who have hosted
many an international figure
and charitable organization at
their Bingham Farms home,
would also host a president.
Mr. Clinton spoke at the
Hermelins' as part of a $50,000-
per-person private reception
Monday afternoon. A source who
wished to stay unnamed, but
who attended the event, said the
president had a great deal on his
mind to say to the 50 or so in at-
tendance.
"He expressed his outrage,
and his sense of concern and em-
pathy, for what the Israelis were
going through," said the source.
"It was obviously on his mind.
I really think he went back to
Washington to study what his
response should actually be to
stop terrorism. He said he was
concerned not only about ter-
rorism isolated to Israel, but ter-
rorism the world over.
"He was outstanding," contin-
ued the source. "It was a major
reception, a top-level reception
demonstrating this community's
support for Bill Clinton and what
he has stood for. He's been a good
friend of Israel, and a good pres-
ident as far as this group is con-
cerned."
Even though he came to the
reception with the news from Is-
rael on his mind, "it was an up
party. It was a positive, enthu-
siastic event. The president was
very warm. Michigan is impor-
tant to him. He spent a very full
day here to bring his message
home to us."
It wasn't difficult for late-
Monday afternoon commuters
to notice that Telegraph Road
was more congested than usual.
With the expected motorcade
of President Clinton, clusters of
spectators braved the cold
weather to get a glimpse. ❑
