SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

recent study by Israel's
comptroller division ex-
poses possible corruption
in the public university
system, according to Yediot

Aharonot.

The comptroller is an ex-
tremely active outside- govern-
ment public servant. Every few
weeks, Israeli newspapers pub-
lish results of disturbing studies
that the comptroller makes of
such public sectors as the police,
army, justice system and gov-
ernment.
The latest study by the comp-
troller alleges that at the Weiz-
mann Institute in Rehovot, four
paintings recently disappeared
from a $1.3 million collection do-
nated to the school, according to

Yediot Aharonot.

The comptroller claims that
the Weizmann Institute failed to
provide reasonable answers
about the art's disappearance, ac-
cording to Yediot Aharonot..
Another public school, Tel Aviv
University, gave preferential
treatment to the grandchild of
a couple who donated money to
the school, the study alleges. Dur-
ing the late 1980s, TAU did not
put the student through the reg-
ular application process when it
awarded the student scholar-
ships — failing to check if she
met the academic and financial
criteria to warrant the aid, ac-
cording to Yediot Aharonot..
Beerseva University in the
Negev, meanwhile, misused
$23,200 from a $75,000 grant do-
nated by an individual for scien-
tific research, the study alleges.
The comptroller charges that the
school applied only $11,500 for
research and $31,300 has disap-
peared, according to Yediot

Aharonot.

Mystery Show

One of the most popular and
innovative radio shows has come
to an end after 18 months of chal-
lenging Israelis to untangle clues
to reveal mystery figures, ac-
cording to Ma'ariv.
On his morning show on Israel
Defense Forces Radio, Avri Gi-
lad asked listeners for names,
and in return, he gave cash
prizes, which grew with every
hour the mystery was not solved.
The biggest prize Mr. Gilad
ever gave was $14,000, when two
friends from Petach Tikva spent
21 days figuring out that the
mystery person in question was
Meir Sormollo, the son of Abra-
ham Sormollo, a famous
Jerusalem restauranteur and
storyteller, according to Ma'ariv.
Former Soviet refusenik
Natan Sharansky, on the other
