FERNDALE

French Gourmet, 23421 Wood-
ward, Ferndale, 810541-1200. Al one
time a great place to go for French pas-
tries and desserts, this has become a full-
fledged restaurant with under 30 seats. It
serves gourmet-style food at resonable
prices. Owners Marvin Bernstein and
wife/executive chef Lina Bernstein, also
roast their own coffees and have added
new features from 40 French syrups to an
extensive line of teas, Parisian vinegars,
oils, honeys, preserves and mustards. Al-
though a complete restaurant row, French
Gourmet is still a classic authentic French
pastry shop and bakery, with excellent
special occasion and wedding cakes.
If going for dinner, take a tip and make
a reservation. Remember, seating capacity
is small.

LATHRUP

LaFendi, 27060 Evergreen, Lothrup
Landing, Lathrup, 559-9099. An elegant
atmosphere, where all areas are a dif-
ferent decor make up this popular Mid-
dle Eastern restuaurant. many of he dishes
are. not found in to many dining spots of
its type. Fresh squeezed fruits and veg-
etables make up the raw juice bar which
people enjoy seven days a week at all
hours.

LIVONIA

D. Dennison's Seafood Tavern
of Livonia, 37716 W. 6 Mile, Laurel

nison's has an established reputation for

among the top gourmet Chinese restau-

Cicero's Ristorante & Bar, 24299

Chris Stevens, husband and wife owners
of Cicero's, know they are bucking a lot
of competition. But the sight of customers
coming back is a great sign. It is open

midnight and Sun. 4 to 9, serving North-
ern and Southern Italian cuisine, fine wires,
homemade desserts and fresh fish like
whitefish, lake perch and plank salmon.

OAK PARK

Bread Basket Deli, 10 / 1 Mile and
Greenfield, Lincoln Shopping Center, Oak
Park, 9680022. A favorite of many peo-
ple for breakfast, lunch, dinner and af-
ter-theater, this has the aura of a modernistic
delicatessen so apparent with colorful
decor. A children's menu is featured along
with party trays. The Bread Basket Deli is
open Tuesday through Sunday 10 a.m.
to 10 p.m.

Golden Bowl, 22106 Coolidge at
9 Mile, Oak Park, 398-5502. The knowl-
edge of Chef Frank Eng is widespread
in Chinese dining. Golden Bowl is open
seven days, Mon.-Thurs. from 11 a.m.
and Sunday from 1 p.m. serving
Szechuan, Mandarin and Cantonese
food. Carryout service is available plus
banquet facilities.

KEEGO HARBOR

ORCHARD LAKE

Sweetwaters Bistro, 1978 Cass

9010. ,Owners Cheryl and Dr. Joel Kimel-
mon continue to please with delicious
[cod and fine presentation at reasonable
prices. Their upscale restaurant is warm,
homey and a welcomed dining experi-
ence. It is open for lunch, Monday thru
Friday, 11 a.m. to 3 p:m. Dinners are
Mon. Thru Thursday, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.;
Friday and Saturday 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.;
and Sunday, 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Private
parties are available Saturday and Sun-
day, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dishes include
fresh fish, pasta, breast of duck, rock of
lamb, etc. Low fat and fat-free items for
the health conscious are also available.

Jake's On The Lake, 4105 Orchard
Lake Rd., Orchard Lake. 851-8888. He's
the imaginative world traveler figure who
has owners Jim Kokus and Ed Manzaria,
also bossmen at Opus One, operating
his new restaurant on the former Pontiac
Trail site of Buster's Bay. Dinners only are
s erved six days, TuesdayThursdc_iy, 5 p.m.
to 10 p.m ; Friday and Saturday 5 p.m.
to 11 p.m.; Sunday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Reservations are accepted for an y

service. It features the imaginative pre-
sentations of Executive Chef Darin Moore,
a member of the U.S. Culinary Olympic
team that will compete in 1996 in Berlin.
Its wine list and gourmet-styled menu items
present a wide selection from which to
choose. Banquet facilities are available
for all events.

ROYAL OAK

Chick-N-Ribs, 118 S. Woodward,
Royal Oak, 544-1211. Much has been
said about this dine in and carryout restau-
rant whose specialties of broasted or bar-
b-q chicken and bar-bq ribs have received
much attention, but as regular customers
say, the proof is in the tasting. It's open
seven days, Sun.-Thurs. 11-10, Fri. & Sat.
11-11.

SOUTHFIELD

Alia's, 27167 Greenfield, Southfield,
559-8222. A good family restaurant serv-
ing American and Lebanese cuisine, Aids
owners Dania and Ed Farah are proud
of their homemade specialties prepared
from natural ingredients. It is open 7 days
a week serving breakfast, lunch and din-
ner. Carryout of its entire menu is avail-,
able as is off-premise catering.

Excalibur, 28875 Franklin Rd., South-
field, 358-3355. When former owner
Pat Archer passed on, people said Ex-
calibur would also go. However, they
didn't reckon with Marty Wilk, own-
er/chef who has made it one of Metro-
politan Detroit's markedly popular dining
and dancing spots. It's Frank Sinatra's fa-
vorite while in the local area. Entertain-
ment is Tues. thru Sat. and complete
catering at Excalibur plus homes, halls, etc.

Gateway Deli, 21754 W. 11 Mile,
Harvard Row, Southfield, 352-4940. A
different touch has been given this pop-
ular delicatessen-restaurant by owner Pe-
ter Bershaj. His assortment of gourmet .
dishes are brought from Peter's former Lar-
co's days, and are combined with familiar
traditional homemade Jewish dishes.
Breakfast, lunch, dinner, party trays and
outside catering are Gateway Deli stand-
outs.

McVee's Sports Bar & Grill,
23380 Telegraph Road, Southfield, 352-
8243. This is more than just another sports
bar and grill restaurant. Veteran restaura-
teur Herman Yagoda features charbroiled

steaks, fresh seafood, brge burgers, baby-
back ribs and lamb chops that he de-
fies others to beat. Also hare-made soups
and daily sjoecials at both lunch and din-
ners, with moderate prices in a casual

and relaxed atmosphere.

New Seoul Garden, 27566 North-
western, Southfield, 827-1600. Authen-
ticity is brought to the table where favorites
such as beef, chicken and shrimp are pre-
pared on a barbeque grill in front of cus-
tomers. Floor seating and a sushi bar also
add to its appeal. Authentic Korean and
Japanese dishes are the theme foods at
this restaurant with a sister Seoul Garden
in Sterling Heights.

PONTIAC

Peking Garden, 29875 North-
western Hwy., Applegate Square, West
Bloomfield, 353-7890. Szechuan, Hu-
nan and Chinese dishes are available for
dinners and carryout seven days a week,
Mon.-Thurs. 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.; Fri.
& Sat. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Sunday 12
noon to 10 p.m. The fresh new atmos-
phere of this awaited restaurant is ac-
cented by the fine Oriental food it serves.

Pike Street, 18 West Pike Street, Pon-

by is noted for its excellent cuisine and
