Rabbi Groner
Rabbi Irwin Groner, spiritual
leader of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek, will be honored by the
Jewish Theological Seminary on
Tuesday, May 7. Dr. Ismar
Schorsch, seminary chancellor,
will present the Wolpert Meno-
rah for Outstanding Achieve-
ment to Rabbi Groner during the
Rabbinical Assembly National
Convention meeting at the Con-
cord Hotel in New York State.

The Rabbinical Assembly is
the international association of
Conservative rabbis, with more
than 1100 members. Each year
an outstanding leader of the Con-
servative Movement rabbinate
is chosen for special recognition
for his or her contributions to
Jewish life.
Rabbi Groner served as pres-
ident of the Rabbinical Assem-
bly from 1990-1992. He is
chairing the committee prepar-
ing a new one-volume Torah
commentary being produced for
the Conservative Movement by
the Rabbinical Assembly.
Rabbi Groner has been a
member of the Board of Gover-
nors of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit, the Rab-
binic Cabinet of the United Jew-
ish Appeal and the Board of
Governors of the United Syna-
gogue. He served as chairman of
the Rabbinical Assembly Con-
ventions of 1976 and 1977. He
was co-chairman of the Nation-
al Youth Commission of the
United Synagogue from 1972-
1976. He held the position of vice
president of the Jewish Com-
munity Council of Detroit from
197401976. Rabbi Groner's es-
says and articles have been pub-
lished in periodicals of the
Conservative Movement.
Rabbi Groner was appointed
by Governor James Blanchard
in 1984 to be the first clergyman
to serve on the Judicial Tenure
Commission of Michigan and
was subsequently named vice
chairman. He has been actively
involved in programs of inter-
faith dialogue in the Metropoli-
tan Detroit Community He
serves as vice president of the
Michigan Board of Rabbis.

Single Mothers
Chanukah Event
The Institute for Single Jewish
Mothers will sponsor a
Chanukah celebration hosted by
the families of Congregation
B'nai Moshe. The event will be
held on Monday, Dec. 18, at the
synagogue. An optional kosher
Chanukah meal will be served
from 6-6:30 p.m. for $6 per adult
and $3 per child. From 6:30-7:45
p.m., a number of Chanukah fes-
tivities will be offered. Partici-
pants will have th e opportunity
to engage in Chanukah crafts,
music and stories while meeting
other families.

At JPM
There will be a Community
Chanukah Party on Sunday, Dec.
17, with the Mask Puppet The-
ater from 2-4 p.m., at the JPM
JCC. This program is sponsored
by The Jewish News, Jewish
Community Center, Congrega-
tion Beth Shalom, Temple
Emanu-El and Neighborhood
Projects. There is no charge.
Elie Weisel's Film Series con-
tinues with video on Adam and
Eve on Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. There
is a charge.
Chanukah Party
Features Music
Penny Steyer, singer-guitarist,
will perform at a Chanukah par-
ty Wednesday, Dec. 20, 7:30 p.m.
at the Zionist Cultural Center in
Southfield, sponsored by the
Metro Detroit District, Zionist Or-
ganization of America. Master of
ceremonies will be humorist-pan-
tomimist Hy Shenlunan.
A native New Yorker, Ms.
Steyer is a graduate from the
University of Miami with a de-
gree in music education. She has
appeared with Jazz-singer Joe
Williams and comedians Jerry
Lewis and Dick Shawn. As a
classical artist, she has toured
Romania and Poland and has ap-
peared with the Miami Philhar-
monic and the Detroit and
Windsor symphony orchestras.
Ms. Steyer is serving as choir di-
rector at Temple Shir Shalom.
There will be refreshments;
admission is free; the public is
invited.
