Royal watchers will be inter-
ested to know that Cassel has a
connection to Queen Elizabeth
II. His granddaughter, Edwina
(1901-1960), married Earl
Mountbatten of Burma. The earl,
of course, was Queen Elizabeth
II's uncle.
Q: Last week my girlfriend and
I were watching "ER." I just don't
get her fascination with this show.
For crying out loud, is George
Clooney that good-looking? And
these complicated plots — the
nurse is engaged to the EMS guy
but she's really in love (isn't she?)
with the doctor, and then that other
doctor has her sister's daughter
and she wants to take care of the
child but she's so busy at work.
Don't I have enough problems of
my own? Do I really need to hear
about all this?
Well, I do, because my girl is ad-
dicted to the show.
So, anyway, the point is we're
watching "ER" and I'm trying to im-
press her so I mention that a
stethoscope was invented by a
Jew. "Are you sure?" she says —
like all I know about is baseball
scores and beer names. She says
she'll only believe it if it's in Tell
Me Why.
A: This isn't the first time Tell
Me Why has come to the rescue
of two such charming lovebirds
as yourselves. Glad to be of ser-
vice, Romeo.
A stethoscope, used to locate
the heartbeat of infants, was in-
deed created by a Jew. His name
was Joseph De Lee.
Born in 1869, Dr. De Lee
served as professor of obstetrics
and gynecology at Northwestern
University and the University of
Chicago. He designed many new
instruments for use in his field
and was the first to use educa-
tional films while teaching ob-
stetrics.
His Notes on Obstetrics (1904)
and Principles and Practice of
Obstetrics (1913) were for many
years standard works. Dr. De
Lee died in 1942.
