T
he Jewish Theological Seminary of
America will honor Mrs. Vivian
Berry at its National Patron's Event
scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31, at the
Breaker's Hotel in Palm Beach, Fla. The
evening's speaker will be Itamar Rabi-
novich, Israel's ambassador to the Unit-
ed States.
Dr. Ismar Schorsch, chancellor of the
Jewish Theological Seminary, will present
Mrs. Berry with the Eternal Light Award
in recognition of her significant contribu-
tion to the dissemination of scriptural val-
ues. Mrs. Berry's dedication has been
shown by her life's work to advance and
strengthen the Jewish community.
Mrs. Berry has been a strong support-
er and leader at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek. She has held numerous positions
including serving as administrator of the
synagogue religious school under the late
Rabbi Adler. Mrs. Berry is a past presi-
dent of the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood and
was the first woman to serve on one of the
synagogue's committees. She was a
founder and chairperson of the Michigan
District Women's League for Conserva-
tive Judaism.
Mrs. Berry has served on the board of
Hadassah; as vice president of the Amer-
ican Jewish Congress; as a member of the
Detroit committee for the maintenance of
the separation of church and state; as
chairperson of the Detroit executive com-
mittee of American Friends of the Weiz-
man Institute.
The speaker, Ambassador Rabinovich,
not only serves as Israel's ambassador to
the United States but also heads Israel's
delegation for negotiations with Syria. He
was an officer in the Israel Defense Forces
during the 1967 war.

Congregation B'nai David will host De-
mocrat Maxine Berman and Republican
Jim Alexander speaking on "Point-Coun-
terpoint — Two Political Insiders Give
a Preview of Next Year's Presidential
Race." This program will be held on
Thursday, Dec. 21, at 7:30 p.m. at the
synagogue. Refreshments will be served.
There is no charge.
Ms. Berman is Democratic State Rep-
resentative of the 36th District and is assistant floor
leader. She chaired and served with distinction on sev-
eral committees and is on the Appropriations Com-
mittee. She is actively affiliated with over 20
community, political, philanthropical and human
rights organizations.
Mr. Alexander is a practicing attorney. He served
three terms as chairman of the Oakland County Re-
publican Committee and was an active volunteer for
the George Bush campaign. Mr. Alexander was pres-
idential elector for the 17th Congressional District
in Michigan and served as executive director for the
Michigan Jewish Coalition. He also chairs and co-
chairs several legal and political committees and serves
on the board of directors of the Jewish Community
Council, Jewish Vocational Service and Advisory Board
of the Michigan Political Leadership Program.
