Defending Israel,
Captured On Film

rom the director of Shoah comes anoth-
er riveting film about Jewish existence.
Claude Lanzmann's latest docu-
mentary, Tsahal, is a five-hour look at
the Israeli Defense Forces. Shown at 2 p.m.
on Nov. 19 at the Detroit Institute of Art's De-
troit Film Theatre, Tsahal is a 1994 docu-
mentary.
The first part of the film begins with an ex-
amination of the Yom Kippur War and its
meaning for the men who fought in it.

Part II examines the repercussions of Israel's
militarism on its civil life. Mr. Lanzmann tours
the Gaza Strip, interviewing those who patrol
it. He also talks with Arabs in the region.
The epic-length examination of the Israeli
army features more than 25 interviews with
the inhabitants of the region.
From the director's point of view, his films
are not documentaries, but dramatized reflec-
tions rather than factual reports.
