Claude Lanzmann's latest docu- mentary, Tsahal, is a five-hour look at the Israeli Defense Forces. Shown at 2 p.m. on Nov. 19 at the Detroit Institute of Art's De- troit Film Theatre, Tsahal is a 1994 docu- mentary. The first part of the film begins with an ex- amination of the Yom Kippur War and its meaning for the men who fought in it. F Two exhausted soldiers waiting to make their first parachute jump. Part II examines the repercussions of Israel's militarism on its civil life. Mr. Lanzmann tours the Gaza Strip, interviewing those who patrol it. He also talks with Arabs in the region. The epic-length examination of the Israeli army features more than 25 interviews with the inhabitants of the region.
