Danielle was born. returning
some time later to manage Elkin
Travel, now located at the Sug-
ar Tree shopping center in West
Bloomfield.
Getting Trans Global off the
ground took Ms. Schwartz to
places she'd never been. She re-
calls sitting in an office lobby on
her first cold call, nervously wait-
ing to be called in for her ap-
pointment. A man from the
telephone company, on his way
out, looked at her and said, "Good
luck to you today."
She got the account. In her
first year, she organized a trip to
South Africa for the company's
top officers. They, in turn, intro-
duced her to other companies.
She also handles the travel
arrangements for the 5,000 or so
people who attend the president's
annual prayer breakfast and
'Tye worked in a lot of places and
I've seen what happens when
people aren't treated right. The
most important thing is to do
what makes the client happy. I
treat people the way I want to be
treated, and that is basically how
I've grown my business," Ms.
Schwartz said.
In her first year as owner of
Trans Global, revenues were $1.9
million. Last year, she took in $5
million.
In the meantime, Ms.
Schwartz moved the agency to a
new, lower-rent location with bet-
ter exposure to the street.
"We're a mid-sized travel
agency now, but we're moving to-
ward doubling our business," she
said. ❑

In the spirit of the season, a
Birmingham women's clothier is
offering a 20 percent discount on
new sweaters this month in ex-
change for old ones.
The used sweaters, in turn,
will be donated to Kadima, a
Jewish-run,. non-profit mental-
health agency that has offered
programs and residential care for
adults with psychiatric disabili-
ties since 1986.
The owner of Tender, at 271
W. Maple Road in downtown
Birmingham, said she chose
Kadima because it is a charity
many of her customers support.
"And since we've been so lucky
to have such wonderful cus-
tomers and they've been so sup-
portive of us, we wanted to, in
turn, do something. We like to be
involved with the community,"
said Karen Daskas, who opened
the store with her sister Cheryl
Daskas two years ago.
