udy Schwartz has arrived.
Propelled by a dream and
a decade's worth of experi-
ence in the industry, the
West Bloomfield resident struck
out on her own, buying a falter-
ing travel agency to see if she
could breathe some new life into
it.
Seven years later, business is
soaring.
Ms. Schwartz, 39, is president
of Trans Global Travel, Inc., in
Farmington Hills, which she
bought for an undisclosed
amount in 1988. Her husband,
Ronnie, just joined the business
as vice president.
She'll also begin her term as
the first female president of the
Farmington-Farmington Hills
Rotary Club next June.

erated with outside sales agents
and one in-house bookkeeper,
one of the former owners' wives.
By the time Ms. Schwartz came
on board, the agents had al-
ready scattered. The only per-
son left was the bookkeeper,
who still works for the compa-
ny.

the talent to build the business,

Crain's Detroit Business in 1987
at Ronnie's urging, she met with
the four silent partners behind
the ad and the agency. They
were looking for a manager,
partner or owner for Trans Glob-
al.
Her friends, relatives and
even an ex-employer urged her
not to throw her money away on
an agency that had few, if any,
accounts, but her dream of own-
ing a business eclipsed theirs
and her own misgivings.
She signed an employment
contract that included a fee

Ms. Schwartz renegotiated
the contract and bought
Trans Global at a lower price in
1988.
"They had no business and
that's when I came in. The
phones didn't ring. It was a very
character-building time in my
life because I learned how to do
things I'd never done before, like
cold calls, knocking on doors,"
she said.
Ms. Schwartz began her ca-
reer as a travel agent at the age
of 19, starting at Jules Doneson
in Southfield and then moving
to Travel Unlimited in South-
field. She took a break from
work after her daughter
