Sinai Hospital Health and Fitness Programs,
Support Groups and Special Services
Sinai Hospital offers a variety of health educa-
tion programs, support groups and services.
There is no charge for the following programs
and services unless otherwise noted. Programs
and services are held at locations throughout
metropolitan Detroit.
Please note the location and address of the pro-
gram of interest to you.
Health and Fitness
Support Programs
Arthritis Self Help Course (ASHC)
Co-sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation and
Sinai's Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation, ASHC is a six-week program
for individuals with arthritis and others close
to them. Topics covered include energy conser-
vation, exercise, pain control, relaxation and nu-
trition. A $20.00 fee supports the Arthritis

Cancer Education Programs

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program
This state-of-the-art rehabilitation program has
been developed for those who have had bypass
surgery, a heart attack or have been diagnosed
with heart disease. This ongoing program is
held at Sinai's Blumberg Health Center and is
covered by most insurance programs. For in-

Cardiovascular Fitness Evaluation
The Cardiovascular Fitness Evaluation has been
developed for individuals who want to deter-
mine their overall fitness level. The evaluation
includes blood work, medical history, body fat
analysis, treadmill fitness test and exercise pre-
scription. The program is held at Sinai Hospi-
tal's Cardiovascular Fitness Center in the
Blumberg Health Center. For fee and other in-

Childbirth and Family Life Education
Sinai Hospital offers numerous classes in child-
birth and family life education both at Sinai Hos-
pital and at various settings in the community.
Among the classes offered are: Prepared Child-
birth, VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Caesarean),
CPR, Parenting and many others. To receive a

Diabetes Education
The Diabetes Outpatient Education Program
will help the person with diabetes, their fami-
ly, and significant others learn about diabetes
and needed self-management skills. The pro-
gram fee is covered by Medicare, Medicaid, HAP,
and several other insurance programs. Profes-
sionals can participate in this program and
receive CEU credit. For more information or

Freedom from Smoking
Sinai Hospital co-sponsors "Freedom from Smok-
ing," a program of the American Lung Associ-
ation of Michigan. The eight-week program
begins with a free orientation. Participants who
wish to continue with the program pay $65 fol-

Health and Wellness Program
This program is designed for those who don't
have heart disease and want to get started on a
plan to improve their overall fitness. For fee and
other information, contact the Cardiovascular

Support Groups
Adult Caregiver Support Group
This group offers support to adult caregivers
who are caring for a loved one who is sick or
disabled. Meetings are held from 3-4:30 p.m.
at the the Jewish Community Center (JCC)
Maple/ Drake Bldg., Functional Recovery
Program classroom, second floor, 6600 West
Maple, West Bloomfield, and at Sinai Hospital
in the West Conference Room (near Zuckerman
Auditorium).

This support group offers topical information on
healthy lifestyles for heart patients and their
families.

Pregnancy Loss Support Group
Hospice Care
Pregnancy Loss Support Groups will be held at
the Bloomfield Township Library. For more in-

Hospice care is available for patients with life-
limiting illnesses.

Pregnancy After Loss Support Group

The Pregnancy After Loss Support Group is
available by request and meetings are held when
enough families are interested. For information,

Schizophrenics Anonymous
This support group is directed to schizophrenic
individuals. For information, call (313) 493-6850.

Stepping Stones Stroke Club
The Stepping Stones Stroke Club is directed at
individuals who have had a stroke.
Location: Sinai Hospital Unit 24 Dining Room
Times and Dates: 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday
of the month and 1:30 p.m. on the third
Wednesday of the month.

This support group is directed to individuals
with a diagnosis of cancer, their families and
friends. A series of six weekly sessions with
guests speakers is offered quarterly. There is
no charge; however, preregistration is required.

Outpatient Diabetes Counseling
Premarital Counseling Classes
Monthly classes are offered at a variety of sub-
urban locations. Attendance at this class meets
the requirements for the certificate needed for
a Michigan marriage license. REV and other sex-
ually transmitted diseases will be discussed.
Couples will receive some free gifts and infor-
mation about Sinai services during the class.
Registration is available by telephone at 1-800-
248-3627 and then choose the Childbirth Edu-
cation option. There is a $20 fee per couple for
this class.
