NAME: Lindsay Raben
TEAM: West Bloomfield High
School varsity swim team
DEED: Raben, 16, now a sopho-
more, is a 50- and 100-yard
freestyle sprinter for the team, as
well as a 100-yard breaststroker.
Last year, West Bloomfield
High School won the Oakland Ac-
tivities Association league cham-
pionships in both dual meets
(with a record of 10-0) and the
league finals.
Raben's best time in the 100-
yard freestyle is 1:04; her best
time in the 50 is :28. Raben likes
the freestyle better than the
breaststroke because "freestyle is
faster and the sprint races are
more exciting and intense."
The West Bloomfield Lakers
sponsored a swimming invita-
tional at the end of last month.
They took first place by beating
six other teams from around the
state.
Raben anchored the winning
200-yard medley relay, and led
off the winning 400-yard freestyle
relay.

Well Help.
Will You?

THE SKINNY: Raben began swim-
ming at age 6 at a West Bloom-
field swim clinic.
From ages 8-10, Raben swam
for the Michigan Sting Rays, a
team that competes year-round.
She swam for the Potomac Swim
Club during the summer from the
ages of 10-13.
The West Bloomfield girls
swim season starts at the end of
August and finishes around the
beginning of November. The
team members practice six days
a week.
Monday through Friday, the
girls work out from 6:45 a.m. - 8
a.m., and then again from 2:30

p.m. - 5 p.m. Every Saturday,
they train from 8 a.m. - 10 a.m.
Raben works out the rest of the
year on her own. She swims, lifts
weights and runs at least five
days a week.
Raben has a 3.2 G.P.A. and is
a member of Savage B.B.G. She
is also involved in the National
Federation of Temple Youth,
Michigan Region through Tem-
ple Kol Ami. Last year, she was
the Kol Ami group's treasurer.
QUOTE: "I enjoy swimming with
the girls on my team. We have
a good time and work hard,"
Raben said. "I am very athletic
and swimming gives me the
opportunity to compete and stay
in shape. I am looking forward to
swimming during my junior and
senior years as well, and I hope
to be captain as a senior."

NAME: Ian Sweet
TEAM: Harrison High School var-
sity football
DEED: Sweet,17, is a senior and the
only Jewish player on the team
this year.
He is a 5-
foot-7-inch, 160-
pound starting
noseguard who
was also a
member of Har-
rison's varsity
team last year,
when the school
won the Class-
A state champi-
onship.
At the begin-
ning of Septem-
ber, Sweet
made the big-
gest play of his
career during
Harrison's first
game of the sea-
son; the team
was trailing
Brother Rice
16-14 at the
Pontiac Silver-
dome.
Sweet recov-
ered an on-side
kick to give his
team the ball
and a chance to score and win.
Harrison, however, did not score.
Sweet also plays varsity base-
ball for Harrison. Last year, he
was starting catcher, when the
team won districts and the league
championship with an overall
record of 20-7.
This coming season, Sweet ex-
pects to play outfield and pitch.

THE SKINNY: Sweet began playing
football and baseball at age 5. He
played for the North Farming-
ton/West Bloomfield baseball
league for nine years, until he was
14.
