Extradition
Request Refused
Boston (JTA) — Survivors of the
Nazi occupation of Lithuania say
they are not surprised by the re-
cent decision by the Lithuanian
government to put aside the ex-
tradition of Aleksandras Lileikis
to stand trial for alleged war
crimes.
Mr. Lileikis is accused of hav-
ing been the chief of the Lithuan-
ian Security Police, known as the
Saugumas, for the entire Vilnius
Province during the German oc-
cupation. The U.S. Department
of Justice filed suit last Septem-
ber to have his American citi-
zenship revoked.
The main concern now of those
who survived the Lithuanian
ghettos and camps is to find an-
other way to ensure that Mr.
Lileikis is brought to account for
his alleged crimes.
The Lithuanian government
said in a cable filed in U.S. Dis-
trict Court on Oct. 2, that even
though an extradition treaty be-
tween the United States and
Lithuania signed in 1924 is in
force, it is not "legally effective"
in the Lileikis case.
The decision by Lithuania
"makes it improbable" that Mr.
Lileikis will ever face extradition,
said Nathan Lewin, president of
the International Association of
Jewish Lawyers and Jurists. He
called the Lithuanian govern-
ment's decision "inadequate and
totally unacceptable under any
rule of law."
Meanwhile, the Justice De-
partment is pursuing its case to
strip Mr. Lileikis of his U.S. cit-
izenship and then deport him.
