San Antonio:
Texas At Its Best

LEWIS ERIC LACHTER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

emember the Alamo? You
might think it is located in
rough, tough Texas coun-
try; but you'll find it right
in the middle of downtown San
Antonio.
You'll also find 10,000 Jews in
this colorful town of 100 million.
this makes it the tenth largest
city in the United States.
Jews found their way to San
Antonio in 1837.But it wasn't un-
til after the Civil War, when the
city became a cattle empire, that
large numbers of our people ar-
rived. They became the usual
community of shop keepers,
traders, tailors and merchants.

R

ming pool, four lighted tennis
courts, fitness center and gym.
The San Antonio Jewish com-
munity offers a day school
named after Israeli hero
Jonathan Netanyahu, several
Hebrew schools and Chai High,
a program for students in grades
8-12.
Coordinating and financing
many of the exciting programs
and institutions in town is the
Jewish Federation of San Anto-
nio. For more information abut
things Jewish in this great tourist
town, write the Federation, 8434
Ahern Drive, San Antonio, TX

The San Antonio River Extension.

The first synagogue, Temple
Beth-El (Reform), was founded
in 1874. Congregation Agudas
Achim (Conservative) followed in
1890. In 1908, Rodfei Sholom (Or-
thodox) opened its doors.And
Beth Am (Reconstructionist) is
the newest congregation (1987).
Would you believe a real live
"eruv" exists in this terrific Texas
town? It's true. This enclosure
created so that Jews can "carry"
car keys, push a stroller, etc., dur-
ing Shabbat is located in an area
around Rodfei Sholom.
You will find kosher food at the
JCC, and also cultural, educa-
tional and recreational programs.

A major highlight of San An-
tonio is the charming River Walk.
Straddling the narrow San An-
tonio River, the Walk is studded
with restaurants (mostly Mexi-
can, but others too), art galleries,
shops and hotels. If you want to
truly enjoy the Walk, go out ear-
ly in the day before the crowds
descend on it.
The famous Alamo is worth
seeing. Founded as a Spanish
mission in 1718, the historic site
is remembered for the battle in
1836 where 180 Texans fought
thousands of Mexican soldiers.
The Texans lost that one.
For a lively taste of Mexico, vis-
