The San Antonio River Extension.

The first synagogue, Temple
Beth-El (Reform), was founded
in 1874. Congregation Agudas
Achim (Conservative) followed in
1890. In 1908, Rodfei Sholom (Or-
thodox) opened its doors.And
Beth Am (Reconstructionist) is
the newest congregation (1987).
Would you believe a real live
"eruv" exists in this terrific Texas
town? It's true. This enclosure
created so that Jews can "carry"
car keys, push a stroller, etc., dur-
ing Shabbat is located in an area
around Rodfei Sholom.
You will find kosher food at the
JCC, and also cultural, educa-
tional and recreational programs.

tonio is the charming River Walk.
Straddling the narrow San An-
tonio River, the Walk is studded
with restaurants (mostly Mexi-
can, but others too), art galleries,
shops and hotels. If you want to
truly enjoy the Walk, go out ear-
ly in the day before the crowds
descend on it.
The famous Alamo is worth
seeing. Founded as a Spanish
mission in 1718, the historic site
is remembered for the battle in
1836 where 180 Texans fought
thousands of Mexican soldiers.
