ETHEL SHAPIRO, 89, of
Farmington Hills, died Sept.
14. Mrs. Shapiro was a past of-
ficer of Hadassah, held all of-
. fices including president of
Tzedakah, active with the
League of Jewish Women and
in the 1980s was mother of the
year through the City of Hope.
Mrs. Shapiro was the beloved
wife of the late Lazer Shapiro,
the devoted mother of the late
Rhoda Moran and the dear
mother-in-law of the late
Lawrence Benderoff. She is
survived by her daughter, Bev-
erly Benderoff of Farmington
Hills; son and daughter-in-law,
Howard and Shirley Shapiro;
grandchildren, Andi and David
Sklar, Eric Benderoff, Rhonda
and Jim Klomp, Cindy and Pat
Donahue, Julie and Allen Zup-
pke, Laurie and Bobby Levine,
Robert and Kim Shapiro, Car-
rie Shapiro; great-grandchil-
dren, Binay, Brent, Kimie,
Matthew, Katie, Jordan, Adam
and Ricky; sisters and brother-
in-law, Millie Labell, Libby
Horton, Sonny and Ben Meyer-
son.

SIDNEY L. SHAYNE, 69, of
Farmington Hills, died Sept.
15. Mr. Shayne was the
founder and owner of Sidney L.
Shayne Insurance Agency. Mr.
) Shayne was also a member of
the Oak Park City Council for
21 years, a member of the Na-
tional Transportation Commit-
tee, Congregation B'nai David,
the Masons and past regional
president ofthe Oak Park
Schools PTA. He is survived by
his wife, Jane Shayne; daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Debbie
and Rabbi Daniel Syme of
Stamford, Conn., Nancy
Shayne of New York, Karen

and Rick Halberg of Farming-
ton Hills, Patty Shayne Gregus

JULIAN SMITH, 70, of
Wayne, died Sept. 18. He is sur-
vived by his brother and sister-

Beatrice Sidman of Farmington
Hills. Services were held at
Machpelah Cemetery Chapel in
Ferndale followed by interment
at the cemetery.

He was president of Gateway
Management Co. in San Fran-
cisco. He is survived by his wife,

and daughter-in-law, Rick, Ken-
ny, Michael, Jerry and Debbie;
stepdaughter, Sherri; stepson,
Tim; 10 grandchildren; sister,
Trine Heimann of Los Angeles;
brother and sister-in-law, Irving
and Vivian of Oak Park.

MALAYA VOLIN, 83, of San
Diego, formerly of Detroit, died
Sept. 19. Mrs. Volin was the
beloved wife of the late Sol
Volin, loving mother of the late
Elaine Toby Lipsitz. She is sur-
vived by her son and daughter-
in-law, Melvin and Sharon
Volin, of Encinitas, Calif.; broth-
er, David Novak of Southfield;
grandchildren, Randy and
Karen Volin, Susan and Bentzi
Gershon, Michael and Carla
Feuer, Carrie and Erik Wallen;
