Batya is one of the beneficia-
ries of the new conditions. She
has finished the equivalent of
nine years of schooling and is now
in a vocational training course
three days a week, while work-
ing as a typist the other two days.
She is one of eight girls who has
just moved into Magen's first
shared apartment.
In Israel, several hundred girls
every year need a protective en-
vironment. They have enjoyed
precious little of the country's
\, milk and honey. The products of
dysfunctional families, they have
experienced traumas such as ne-
glect, rape or incest. They have
never properly learned the norms
of social behavior, of hygiene and
health.
They are severely disturbed
emotionally, unable to trust peo-
ple, have low self-esteem and are
very aggressive. Some have run
away from home, dropped out of
school or work, taken drugs or at-
tempted suicide.
Their numbers now include
immigrant teen-age girls from
the former Soviet Union and
Ethiopia, for whom the transition
to a new society has been partic-
ularly hard.
There have been tragic cases
in which society has failed. A few
months ago, Sigal's body was
found in an alleyway in Tel Aviv.
The future offers
new opportunities.

At only 17, she was dead of a drug
overdose. She had supported her
drug habit through prostitution.
Two years previously, she had
run away after only two weeks at
Magen, and the social services
lost track of her until her body
was found.
For Batya, the future now
offers new opportunities, in stark
contrast to Sigal. While the
rehabilitation process for Batya
and the other girls at Magen is
complex, they are being offered a
fresh start and a life away from
prison or the margins of so-
ciety. Ili
