Fantastic Family Night

F

amily time is a great time at
the Jewish Community Cen-
ter. This will be no exception
on Saturday, September 30 for Fan-
tastic Family Night. Don't hesitate
to show up for this two hour pro-
gram which starts at 7:30 p.m. and
concludes at 9:30 p.m. The evening
will be full of fun for toddlers ages
6 months to 2 years and kids from
7 years to 12 years.
All five indoor tennis courts in
the Rosenberg Recreation Com-
plex will be transformed into ar-
eas to rollerblade, play soccer,
shoot hoops on lowered basket-
ball nets, and participate in par-
ent-child games. Toddler activities
will be going on in the rec. room
in the Rosenberg Complex with
an instructor who specializes in
programming for this age catego-
ry. Fantastic Family Night will be
highly organized. There will be a
half hour rotation of the above ac-

tivities ac-
cording to
age. There-
fore, each
child will
have the
chance to
participate
in age ap-
propriate
activities i.e.
rollerblade,
soccer, and
basketball. One court will remain
open with a variety of sports
equipment for all to play. The cost
for members is $2.00 a child or a
maximum of $5.00 per family. The
cost for non-members is $3.00 a
child or a maximum of $8.00 per
family. Fantastic Family Night is
full of fun, fabulous, and fascinat-

Teen Connection Kick Off

BYO/JCC Teen Connection
will begin the 1995-1996
program year with a Kick-
Off Party, which will be held on
Saturday, September 23, from
8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. at the
Maple/Drake JCC. Music will be
provided by Joe Cornell, and the
evening will include games, prizes,
refreshments and lots of fun!
Teen Connection is the 7th and
8th grade program of B'nai B'rith
Youth Organization and is co-

sponsored by the Jewish Commu-
nity Center. The program will of-
fer monthlyrecreational, social and
cultural programs for its members.
Teen Connection membership is
$25 and runs through August
'96.A11 registered members will
be admitted free to the Kick-Off
Party, while the cost to non-mem-
bers is $5.00.

ttention Swimmers! The
first season of the new JPM
Rockhopper Swim Team
will begin with a free trail period
from September 21-October 5. Reg-
istration is now taking place for
youths ages 5-18. The swim season
will extend from September 21 to
December 23. Practices will be held
on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and
Thursday, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Par-
ticipants must attend at least 2
practices per week in order to com-
pete at swim meets. The cost will
be $45 for members and $65 for
non-members.
Jason Spiller, JPM Sports & Fit-
ness Program Coordinator will be

the head coach, and will be assist-
ed by Leslie Hawkins and Kristy
Burns.
The team will be competing
against other USSA teams in the
Metro Detroit area. Participants
need to be able to swim only one
pool length to join the team. The
focus will be on physical fitness,
sportsmanship, team unity, im-
provement of swimming tech-
niques, enjoyment and goal setting
and achievement.
Lori Heddle, JPM Sports & Fit-
ness Director, said, "We are thrilled
that Jason is at the helm of the
team. He is extremely qualified."
He was Assistant Coach of the
Kalamazoo YMCA Swim Team
and the Brighton Eels as well as
1994 Macomb County Swim
Coach of the year, and Head Coach
of both the Mt. Clemens High
School Boys Varsity and Girls Var-
si ty Swim Teams. Jason started his
swimming career as an All State
Swimmer in High School and was
on the team at Western Michigan
University.

JCC Wishes Community
A Happy New Year

id you know that there is
more than one New Year
in the Jewish calendar? Al-
though Rosh Hashana literally
means "head of the year" , the civ-
il calendar year for the Jewish peo-
ple actually begins with the
month of Nisan (March-April),
when the first crops are harvest-
ed. The month of Tishri, when the
High Holidays fall, was the be-
ginning of the Jewish religious
year. The Bible refers to it as the
seventh month of the year. There
are other New Years in Jewish tra-
dition listed in the Talmud. The
