towers of the World Trade

like giant silver rectangles,
gleaming in the sunlight. They
are a striking sight and just one
of the attractions that make Low-
er Manhattan such an intriguing
area.
The southern tip of Manhat-
tan Island is an increasingly pop-
ular tourist destination, with
attractions so varied that one can
easily spend an entire weekend
here, as I did recently.
In this case, one bite of the Big
Apple was entirely satisfying.
Without even venturing into mid-
town, I enjoyed a smorgasbord
of pleasures: Wall Street without
stockbrokers, the waterfront
promenades of Battery Park,
South Street Seaport with its re-
stored sailing vessels and mod-
ern piers. All of it was in the
compact area below Greenwich
Village, from Chambers Street to
Battery Park, from the Hudson
to the East River.

New York Vista has become a
popular choice for Jewish wed-
dings since it re-opened Nov. 1 af-
ter extensive renovation.
The cosmopolitan modernity
of the World Trade Center com-
plex co-exists with a strong sense
of the past, which is also part of
Lower Manhattan.This is, after
all, where New Amsterdam be-
gan; and more than anywhere
else in New York, its resonates
with the early history of the city.
At Bowling Green, Peter Mi-
nuit is said to have transferred
ownership of Manhattan Island
from the Indians to the Dutch for
a mere $24 worth of trinkets and
beads.
In the graveyard of historic
Trinity Church, Alexander
Hamilton is buried. Not far from
the statue of George Washington
on Wall Street is the site where
the first president took oath of of-
fice in 1789.
Lower Manhattan also is
where Jewish life began, and
modern travelers can easily trace
that history.

taste of the Big Apple was my ho-
tel base for the weekend, the New
York Vista, ideally located right
between the twin skyscrapers of
the World Trade Center.
From my window on the 20th
floor, I could look down on the
World Trade Center plaza with
its bold modern sculptures. Right
next door was the World Trade
Center skyscraper with an ob-
servation deck 110 stories high,
offering a spectacular view of
- Manhattan and beyond.
An added novelty on Sunday
was the sight of a chuppah on the
plaza of the World Trade Center;
the hotel was the scene of a fes-
tive Jewish wedding for 500
guests, which started with a cer-
emony on the outdoor plaza. With
kosher catering available, the .
At Battery Park, on the corner
of Whitehall and State streets, is
a small plot of ground with a flag-
pole which rises from a granite
base. A plaque on the base hon-
ors a key event in Jewish histo-
ry, with the inscription: "Erected
by the State of New York to hon-
or the memory of the twenty-
three men, women and children
who landed in September 1654
and founded the first Jewish com-
munity in North America."
From this spot, it was just a
quick walk down to the water-
front where the ferries for the
Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
depart regularly.
The lines for the, ferry ride
were long, but the wait was well
worth it, as it had, been on earli-
ervisits. Seeing the -Statue of Lib-
