The Michigan Region of Women's
American ORT will convene a
community forum titled "Re-
defining Michigan Schools: What
ARE our Choices?" on Thursday,
Sept. 28, 7:15 p.m. at the Com-
munity House, 380 S. Bates, in
Birmingham. The forum, which
is co-sponsored by the Detroit
Chapter of Hadasah, the Nation-
al Council of Jewish Women,
Greater Detroit Section, and Cler-
gy & Citizen United, is free of
charge and open to the public.
David Gad-Harf, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Community
Council of Metropolitan Detroit,
will serve as moderator. Sched-
uled participants representing dif-
fering - and conflicting views
include: Marilyn F. Lundy, vice
president of the State - Board of
Education; State Senator Gary C.
Peters of the 14 District; Kathleen
Straus, member of the State
Board of Education; and Michael
David Warren Jr., administrative
assistant for School Code Reform.
Topics to be discussed include
new forms of public ownership
of educational enterprises, cur-
riculum goals, redefined concepts
of schools, school aid and vouch-
ers and other current critical is-
sues in education.
The community forum is be-
ing chaired by Women's Ameri-
can ORT members Patti Aaron,
a resident of West Bloomfield,
and Debbie Levin of Southfield.

The Jimmy Prentis Morris Jew-
ish Community Center will pro-
vide High Holiday Services for
unaffiliated senior adults. Dr.
Joseph Levine will serve as can-
tor. Tickets may be purchased at
the JPM reception desk.
Mondays through Fridays at
noon there will be a kosher hot
lunch program.
This daily meal is served on a
first come, first served basis. A
donation is suggested. For infor-

Local Forum

Hillel Moses will offer the fol-
lowing adult education opportu-
nities available at the synagogue.
Cantor Ben-Tzion Lanxner
will offer a class on Torah and
Haftorah Cantillation for adults,
Monday nights from 6-7 p.m.
during the school year.
Sara Lanxner will offer a be-
ginning Hebrew reading and
conversation class for adults,
Monday nights from 6-7 p.m.
Rabbi Aaron Bergman will of-
fer two monthly classes on Sun-
day mornings. The first is an
introduction to the foundations
of Judaism. It begins Sunday,
Sept. 10, at 10 a.m. The first top-
ic is surviving and enjoying the
High Holidays. The second
course is "Talmud for Absolute
Beginners." It begins Sunday,
Sept. 17, at 10 a.m.
Rabbi A. Irving Schnipper will
offer a study session every Shab-
bat afternoon, one half-hour be-
fore the Minchah service.
All classes are free and open to

IRP Hears
Mel Ravitz
"Detroit: Persons, Places, Prob-
lems" will be the subject of a talk
given by Melvin J. Ravitz. The
program, sponsored by the In-
stitute for Retired Professionals,
will be presented on Thursday,
Sept. 21, at 1 p.m. at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community Cen-
ter.
Councilman Ravitz has been
a member of the Detroit City
Council since 1981. His past po-
sitions include chairman of the
Southeast Michigan Council of
Governments and of the Wayne
County Board of Supervisors.
Mr. Ravitz also is an emeritus
professor of sociology at Wayne
State University.
The event is open to the pub-
lic at no charge. For information

Train Days
At The Village
Greenfield Village will conduct
a rail weekend as historic and
modern trains converge at the
depot during Railroad Days,
Sept. 23 and 24.
More than a dozen railroad
cars, coal-burning and diesel lo-
comotives, and even a little red-
caboose will be on display for
railroad enthusiasts to enjoy.
Hands-on activities, model
trains, demonstrations and per-
formances will put everyone into
he engineer's seat.
Children can operate a child-
sized G-gauge train set or watch
model trains along "HO" gage
tracks. The can also try on rail-
road clothing, listen to a story-
teller share a train tale or two
and even create music on rail-
road track chimes.
Admission to Railroad Days
and all special weekend pro-
grains is included with Green-
field Village admission.
