Oral Histories
Capture Past
Individuals who wish to learn
how to "Capture Moments, Past
and Present" through oral histo-
ry are invited to the first series of
programs at the Oak Park and
West Bloomfield Jewish Com-
munity Centers.
The Jimmy Prentis Morris
building will begin the series 4:30
p.m., Sept. 6. Classes will also be
held Sept. 13, 20, 27, at 4:30 p.m.
The Maple-Drake Center will
begin its series 4:30 p.m. Sept. 7.
Classes also will be Sept. 14, 21
and 28, at 4:30 p.m.
Glenn Ruggles, a member of
the Michigan Oral History Asso-
ciation, will conduct the series of
hands-on workshops that will
teach individuals the techniques
of interviewing, ethics and use of
equipment to gather and preserve
history. On-sight interviews will
be conducted.
The event is co-sponsored by
the Jewish Community Archives
and Jewish Community Center.
The event is part of the Genera-
tions Together program, a series
funded through a Max M. Fisher
Jewish Community Foundation
grant from the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit.
For details, call Eileen Polk at
the Center, (8100 661-7648.
Program Registry
Seeks Volunteers
'Temple Israel will hold both a
blood drive and a bone marrow
registration drive at its annual
picnic on Labor Day, Monday,
Sept. 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Finding unrelated matched
donors is particularly difficult for
certain ethnic groups. Since mar-
row types are inherited in the
same way as skin, eye and hair
types, a match is most likely with-
in the racial or ethnic group of the
patient. The recruitment of vol-
unteer marrow donors from our
Jewish community is very im-
portant because so many derive
from similar ethnic backgrounds.
The potential to help a fellow Jew
to overcome a fatal disease is too
important; everyone eligible
should register.
Anyone between the ages of 18
and 55, in good general health
and not excessively overweight
can conceivably become a volun-
teer marrow donor. To be added
to the National Marrow Donor
Program Registry, volunteers
must sign a consent form and
have a small sample of blood
drawn for testing.
The Sept. 4 drive by Temple Is-
rael is being conducted by the
Southeast Michigan Red Cross,
the local NMDP donor center. To
register for one or both of the dri-
ves, call the Temple office, 661-
5700.
